how important are leadership positions for college?

there’s a student body prez at every school. if the goal is to stand out then why chase after positions that someone in every school has?

if u attend a competitive stem high school, have slightly lower gpa (not THAT low either) but are applying for a humanities major, does that give u a boost over other kids in your school applying for stem majors to get into a t10?

say u have lower grades in the stem classes (strong grades in humanities tho) but ECs and essays tell a very strong humanities narrative and are exceptional, and apply for a humanities major, does that make you stand out?
