Demonspawn is Simple, Troll is intermediate

Troll is really not very good at all in the mid game on. There are chance based conditions but the species generally sucks and the aptitudes make it hard and annoying to play. Demonspawn can be utterly broken and when you get a full claws stacks the species is **far** superior to trolls in every single way.

There is not a single thing trolls can do better than Ds with claws. Trolls are worse than Naga in the late game and IMO a complete pain in the ass and "simple" should not be used as a way of saying it's the most chopped species in the game.

If you tell a new player to play TrBe because they're easy they're going to grow to hate the game because of how hard it is past the early game due to a slight possibility they're getting armor. There's only one way to play troll too and that's to charge in unarmored which is always wrong.

Here's my idea : Bring back Death Knight and put DsDK as a simple role. Ds^Yred is busted simple and straightforward and throwing players into the beginner role with backup and damnation is plainly superior than tossing them in as a glassy giant with a severe learning disability.

You can make a guide for a melee Ds,

Train fighting (asterix), train weapon/claws(asterix) train invo(+) and you enter simple difficulty with Yred. No complex skill arrangement required! Works into post S

Edit : good points. ITT simple intermediate advanced is more of a "how easy this class can be played" vs "overall power"

Fun build : Melee DsMo^Yred

Decided to take a break from Chei for a while. Currently in extended with enslaved Glorxx Vloq and a yoked black mark HP regen full STR Ds.

Demonspawn Melee mutations synergize amazingly with yred. You can charge straight into combat and if the heat gets too high you have an army of undead waiting to save you. The innate heal on kill mutation helps you create an on demand angry mob and the abilities are incredibly helpful in Pan and Hell. Tiamet is an excellent bound soul but Glorxx Vloq gives you a ring of allied executioners following you around. Throw torch hits harder than even damnation and combined with the last ability takes down unique pan lords and their whole party extremely quickly too.

Anyone get this one yet? It mutates you and has a whole host of weird enemies. It has mutation catalysts that grant good mutations!

What are the benefits over Mint?

I love Linux. Last February I got mint and fell in love very quickly with it. I l'm doing my first major upgrade soob however on my computer and want to install Arch and really immerse myself. My question is what benefits will I get switching from mint to Arch and what should I expect in terms of difficulty if I have successfully used Debian and Mint?

Arch and KVM Windows questions

Doing a major upgrade next week. Here's my plan.

Get second graphics card, a third monitor. Switch from Mint to Arch for the joy of having a learning experience. Install KVM and use a dedicated GPU just for paralell Windows.

Just have a few questions for someone savvy. Can I run Windows in it's own screen and have it utilize internet, sound, etc? I dual boot Windows but I *really* want to virtualize it so I can run it on demand in KDE plasma.

Beating Mnoleg floor with Chei?

Someone recommended doing Pan without Lichform and it's gone very well. Torment against rN+++ is like extended smite and a spellbinder whip was immensely helpful in getting all the runes except for Mnoleg's floor.

My question is, what's the best way of taking this floor on without Lich or Zin? I had my run tilted to death by dozens of mutations. Even slime was far less self destructive.

One idea is make sure I can use my death talisman before getting to the floor because there's no reliable way of tanking mutations that I'm aware of without taking Zin.

MiFi Magic Hybrid?

Has anyone gotten any Minotaur Fighters into magic to successfully cast at least Manifold Assault by extended? (Lichform?) I want to run a Minotaur into pan and hell but I've never really done it without some high level spells.

I'm thinking of starting as a MiCj to overcome mentally retarded magician status, dumping into INT, going Gozag/Veh into Chei or Kiku.

I'll post a YAVP as a MiCj casting spells tomorrow if I can get one off the ground

Why does Alistair's Walking Alembic look like that?

If this spell erects a massive robot why is the icon a menacingly smelly dong?

YASD - LCS 68 Damage

I had maxed spellcasting, Ice magic, Fire magic on a melee hybrid BaFi with 40 AC, 40 EV, 40 SH. Slimes done, Crypts done, Tesseracts gone, Ez. I'm killing one of the final enemies on Z:5 getting mentally ready for Pan with Rimeblight, Fire Storms, Borgnors Revive, Splinter online. Even made it to Zig:15

The Lich had a tiny sliver of health left I had half. Two turns. Later, dead. The LCS had a high roll.

I've said it once I'll say it again, LCS can one hit you.

Render distance question.

If I cast discord and leave the area (100 tiles away) does the game still continue the situation?

Chei to trump RNG reliably (Beginner friendly)

(To critics this is contrarian advice but I share it because I have had success with it and have streaked in the past.)

I'm by no means a great player at DCSS but I found a strategy to minimize RNG's impact on your performance. This will work on most characters and I personally use this often to test out new features or to reliably structure a viable build for extended.

This is also my goto build for a caster. This is a far more robust method of casting than going the "book start blaster" route.

Prerequisites :

  1. Viable as a "Fighter" start.

  2. Ability to get to temple (D:4-D:7)

  3. All points to DEX

If you have a strategy that gets you to a Chei alter reliably, use it. General advice applys as normal.

Here's the play I use.

Assume standard recommended gameplay order.

Part I :

  1. Take chei.

  2. Dump 15+ levels into dodging. The trick here is that even if RNG utterly screws you there's still a solid late game development you can make very early. I regularly survive lair and make it to orc with 30+ EV and mediocre armour and weaponry. This is worst case scenario and worst case scenario I still have a viable character!!

  3. Touch up on offensive skills. Fighting isn't super important here but you want to balance your offense so you can kill quickly.

3.5. If you have bad gear focus on your dodging first and foremost. A character with shitty weapons has a firm damage cap. Dodging will give you more room to poke that death yak with a stick or decide on an exit strat.

  1. As you get more time for RNG to act in your favor focus on patching any holes you may have. Now is a great time to pump armour and spellcasting up.

Part II Basics of Pivoting:

Now depending on circumstances the location you may differ from run to run. Once you start mowing down crowds flying by the seat of your tab key you can start to build overwhelming offense rather than sufficiant offense. You'll learn what it means when a character stands on two (or more) legs vs when it's hanging on for dear life.

  1. I select magic from whichever school I find the most fun (or books for) and start grinding spellcasting and x school up.

You ideally want the magic as a secondary kill button. Manifold for example is incredible in extended with a heavy weapon at 1.2 delay. The enemies you can't kill with your magic meter you should be able to finish off without panicing. Too much magic crutch will destabilize your character in high stakes situations so be sure to be capable of maximum damage in melee.

  1. As the fail rate drops I focus on armour and use Ctrl F to find INT boosting gear.

(Optional 7.) If I plan on going into extended I put focus on getting Shapeshifting to 21 around Depths (wildshape necklace required). I typically complete Depths 1-Zot, Crypt, Zot 1-5, Slime. This may vary for you or by your run.

  1. Complete the game or use this as a base to max out skills in Pan/Abyss and try to get 15 runes.

Species I tried this with and had great success.

FoFi : 7 wins in 5 days, high WR. Axes + Evo. BaFi : Excellent synergy NaFi : Total powerhouse towards late game, underrated GrFi : Obviousy.. DsFi : Reliable

Berserker -> short blades.

I think this may be one of the most reliable starts in the game. I got through lair and orc with a +5 chaos dagger. The speed and the accuracy of short blades coupled with Trog gives you competitive damage for the early game. Not to mention that an unenchanted QB hits 60 bonus damage during Berserk and QB's spawn at your feet automatically.

I have more wins with a normal SB fighter than a LB fighter. Thoughts?
