Just wondering if this sub has enough power to organise some kind of collective tribute to John Kear at Magic. Obviously, Wakey v Cas makes sense for a tribute, as does the Hull derby on Saturday. Reckon we could get a chant or something going?
Today is Global MND Awareness Day. Today, we commemorate those we have lost, those battling MND, their families, and those who fight for a world free of MND. We will beat MND.
From a rugby perspective, today is 2 years since Leeds' first home game following the death of Rob Burrow. Going into the game, I think everyone believed the game not to matter, and the tributes to Rob to be the most important thing. Likely a pre-emptive coping mechanism for what felt like an inevitable defeat. The tributes were amazing: wonderful messages, over 70 of Rob's former teammates (including Danny Buderus, who flew from Australia just for the game), great performances. Once the whistle went, it was clear that the game itself was a tribute. A young, patched together side put in one of the bravest performances in Leeds history. Brodie scored two brilliant tries, no 7 Matt Frawley another. The defensive commitment was also amazing, with experienced and inexperienced alike making brilliant try-saving tackles.
In sport, we celebrate and pay tribute in our own way. This MND Awareness Day, in a world full of adversity, we must dare to dream.
John Kear's funeral will be streamed online. Link to stream and the donation page for West Yorkshire Dog Rescue (requested by the family in lieu of flowers) in the article.
