Running Haleakalā Volcano on Maui?

Running Haleakalā Volcano on Maui?

I may have an opportunity to run the the trails inside the Haleakalā Volcano on Maui in early August. Preliminary plan is to start at the summit and end at the Halemau'u trailhead as pictured.

Would welcome any tips or guidance from anyone who may have visited the place.

Photos give the impression that the flatter surfaces are sandy. Is this the case, or not worth worrying about?

Thanks!

Traveling within the US by air with powdered NSM?

How is everyone traveling with the powdered form of NSM?

Any issues getting through TSA with what does appear to be a suspicious white powder?

I'll only be bringing five or six days worth if it matters.

Beginner Tips: Tinea (athlete's foot, jock itch)

I don't claim to be an expert. I have been running for several decades and made many mistakes so I thought I'd pass along some tips.

Its that time of year in the northern hemisphere folks...

What is Tinea: Tinea is a contagious fungal infection. It is often called Ringworm but has nothing to do with worms and may or may not appear as rings on the skin.

  • Tinea Corporis - Ring-shaped, scaly, itchy plaques on the skin
  • Tinea Pedis - Athlete’s Foot
  • Tinea Cruris - Jock Itch - yikes!

Keep in mind that Tinea, like all fungus, thrives in moist, dark, humid and poorly ventilated environments. Here's a few simple things to help prevent it.

  • Change out of sweaty athletic clothing as soon as possible.
  • Don't leave sweaty athletic clothing in a duffel bag, car trunk or thrown in a pile on the floor.
  • Wash sweaty athletic clothing as soon as possible after exercise. If you can't wash clothing immediately then hang it on the bathroom towel rack or somewhere exposed to air and light so that it can dry.
  • Don't use poufs or washcloths in the shower.
  • If you use a back brush then don't leave it wet in the shower. Shake off excess water, remove it from the shower and place it where it can dry. A windowsill with plenty of light is ideal.
  • Tinea often occurs between the toes, near the achillies tendon, behind the knees, groin, buttocks or any place which might be missed while washing. Pay particular attention to these areas.
  • Periodically use an antispeptic skin cleanser such as Hibiclense on areas prone to infection.
  • An antifungal preventative powder or spray such as Lotramin when not exercising might help prevent it.

I got it a few years ago at the top of my butt crack. Annoying.

Females are not immune and my daughter got it when she started cross-country for the first time. I could have done a better job ensuring that she practiced good hygiene. Regardless, it was so bad that we had to go to the dermatologist, which is where many of the tips above come from.

Would love to hear your tips as well. What's worked and what hasn't.

I washed a Polar H10 heart rate sensor in the dishwasher

Steam pre-clean... High heat... It still works.

Not recommending it tho.

I think it was on the countertop and accidentally got knocked onto the open door while loading and unloading. I only saw it because I dropped a spoon and pulled the bottom rack out to retrieve it. There it was, all squeaky clean.

Pretty sure it was in there for a few cycles too because I haven't been able to find it for a few days. I have a spare so it wasn't a big deal.

Used it today on a 50 minute easy run and seems to work fine. I brought the spare just in case but didn't need it.

Just felt like saying that.
