Might be a dumb question but why is there so much discourse around people recording interactions with Meta Glasses?

[TLDR: To get everyone up to speed Meta glasses is a pair of glasses with some technology in them. Stuff like an Ai assistant, speakers and more importantly for this post the camera. This camera can actually record things but there’s usually a slow blinking white light to indicate that it’s recording.]

So recently I’ve been seeing a wave of videos recorded from a first person perspective of stuff like people rollerskating/skateboarding, or a cow boy riding a horse, or more popularly people going up to strangers and asking them stuff. I thought these videos were actually very unique and some a little cool but as time went on I started noticing a lot of hate for these glasses.

The hate for them seemed to stem from videos where men would ask out random women and post it online. I know the problem is that person being recorded didn’t give consent but even that part kind of confuses me.

I mean for as long as cameras existed people have always been taking pictures of random people intentionally or unintentionally. If you’ve ever taken a picture of your friends or family in a public area chances are there’s plenty of people in the background who didn’t ask to be in that picture and will always be in the picture without them even knowing.

And as for the recording women asking them out, that kinda content has been on the internet since the internets conception. People in the 2010’s were doing it, and so were people in the late 2000’s.

And if the part that bothers people is the recording people discreetly thing that’s also existed for a while. Before meta glasses there was a camera man recording the interaction from like 15 feet away, or the classic phone in shirt pocket or Jean pocket. It’s not something new that just magically appeared because the glasses exist.

If anything the recording seems like a good thing in case you get harmed or something and the footage serves as proof in court or something. The same way dash cams have been used (which is also recording people without consent…especially their license plates) and have helped people in otherwise awful car crash scenarios.

Anyway to wrap this all up I’m not advocating that recording people without consent is a good thing and we should all do it. I’m just confused as to why people are suddenly upset about the Meta Glasses thing when all the stuff it does is things we as people have been doing for ages 😭
