Double Trouble

Another one of my recent zippo mods is a modified zippo double torch, into a double yellow adjustable flame.

I got inspired by the double yellow flame st duponts specifically designed for cigars and thought it shouldn’t be that hard to do to a zippo. IT WAS… The problem was getting the flame heights to match across the adjustable range.

See with a stock double torch the fitting on top of the tank has one exit straight up and one off to the side for each jet. You could just attach a brass fitting to each of those, however, because the brass fittings have no back pressure the one coming straight up is always wayyyy bigger of a flame. So all I had to do was custom design and 3d print, out of high temp plastic, a single to double splitter that fit inside the little remaining space inside the zippo. Plus somehow fit in a block off plug for the other unused hole. But I did it, and it works so well for cigars I absolutely love it.

The reason I had to do the splitter and couldn’t just put a restrictor on the taller flame coming out the top hole was because even if I tuned it perfectly, the hight of the flame would not change the same as you adjusted it compared to the non restricted one.

Anyways I know most cigar smokers use torch lighters because the yellow flames struggle outside in the wind, but for an inside or no wind lighter I feel like this has a right to exist purely based on how cool it is.

Modded Single Torch

I have seen a few people do this before. Essential you just take a stock single torch insert and replace the jet with a straight through nozzle (usually from a bic) and you get a piezo electric ADJUSTABLE yellow flame butane insert.

Most people will just have the nozzle hanging loose in the chamber and ditch the black sleeve around the jet. I wanted one that was more professional, so I disassembled the thing and cut up the stock jet nozzle on the lathe and bored out the center hole to solder in a permit brass nozzle so the insides are still sealed from stuff falling in. Plus I can keep the black heat shield and it looks completely stock. Finally I used my 3d printer and some high temp resin to make a new side cover that is actually easy to remove dozens of times without it breaking like the stock one.

Anyways let me know what you all think. I know this isn’t a new concept as there’s a vector insert like this and plenty of people who have done this before but I’ve never seen anyone do a more “professional job” modifying a real zippo insert.
