There was a purse in fair condition I planned on buying, and the seller sent an offer for $18. I was hesitant to purchase immediately since I was warned by Mercari about the seller having an “unusually high” cancellation rate of 30% when I tried adding the purse to my cart.
Additionally, they had no information whatsoever listed so I asked for measurements. By the time the seller got back to me with the measurements, the offer had expired.
I thanked them for the additional photos and asked if they’d consider selling for $15. They go on to say no, they wouldn’t earn enough from the sale. $3 less than their initial offer for a purse with exterior pen marks and stains but ok. That’s fine, I understand. I ask if they can resend their initial offer of $18 again, and they delete/ inactivate the entire listing.
What the hell happened? It’s like they were offended by their own offer. Was I wrong? It makes me wonder if this person even understands how offers work and maybe that’s why they cancel so many orders due to not realizing they’re sending offers they don’t approve of somehow, then canceling the order… either that, or if they even get a sense you’ll give less than 5 stars they cancel/ block the sale. Which doesn’t make sense in my case considering I was nothing but polite and understanding in my communications with them.
I will say this seller seemed off/ strange; they didn’t understand what a strap drop measurement was, the photos were terrible, and every single listing title and description of theirs ended in exaggerated ellipsis like this “. . . . . . .” which just strikes me as odd. They’re either very old, very young, don’t speak English, or a combination of two.
Should I even bother reaching out to them? Regardless of the condition and the strange/ petty seller, it was a very hard to find vintage bag that I fully planned to purchase and wanted, so this just really sucks. What would you do?
