Yesterday I had my second opinion consult about a hysterectomy. I’m 41F with 2 prior c-sections. I need a hysterectomy due to multiple fibroids measuring a range of 10-16cm. I want the hysterectomy and am feeling ready to do it and I loved the doctor I met with. The plan is to remove everything but the ovaries.

This doctor was WAY more thorough than the one I went to for my first opinion. She read the notes from my last C-section and told me that my uterus is fused to my bladder and possibly bowels. I also have a ton of scar tissue. She explained to me why my last C-section took five hours and the recovery was miserable. Uterus is in worse shape than I realized, and that’s saying something because I knew it was bad. She ordered a vaginal ultrasound to get more info, and she’ll do a MRI only if needed.

She told me this is likely going to be a very involved surgery of 5+ hours, and she may have to call in some other specialists to assist. I guess in my mind I thought it would be as easy as just removing it. I’m really overwhelmed and scared of such a long surgery and recovery. She said there’s a non-zero chance I’ll need to go home with a catheter for a while.

I’d love to hear from anyone who had more complicated hysterectomies and what your pros and cons were.
