In the foreground you'll see our native Tulip Poplar, Liriodendron tulipifera. Background is mod approved!

It goes by a few other common names such as Yellow Poplar, Canoewood, and Tulip Tree. Canoewood is derived from being preferred by Native Americans to make canoes due to their long straight trunks, light buoyant wood, relatively rot resistant, and easy to carve out.

Native to much of the Eastern United States, it is the only North American species in the genus, with the only other species found in Asia, Liriodendron chinense.

It belongs to the ancient Magnolia family, Magnoliaceae, which can be easily seen when comparing its large yellow flowers.

Recently this genus has been discovered to be in a category of its own. It's not a "Softwood", nor a "Hardwood", but a tentatively named "Midwood". More about the research on "Midwood".

The large yellow flowers are a preferred pollen and nectar source for many birds and insects, while also being a host plant to over 20 species. This includes some of the largest, and THE largest, moth species in North America. This includes the Tulip Tree Silkmoth, Promethea Silkmoth, and the Tulip Tree Beauty

Growing best in full sun, loamy and acidic soils with various soil compositions, it will quickly grow at a rate of 3-5 feet per year. Being one of the largest trees in North America, it can easily reach 100' with some records of it getting to 200' tall and 10' diameter. So, it's best grown in areas where it has plenty of room to grow.

You can find this beautiful tree and many other North Carolina native plants at Knotty by Nature Natives in Durham NC. 5911 Mount Hermon Church Rd. Durham Open Saturdays seasonally from 9-4. https://www.knottybynaturetrees.com/category/all-products

First we have Virginia Sweetspire, Itea virginica. This shade loving shrub grows 4-8' tall. Its long white racemes can be up to 6" long and are very fragrant. Add this to your pollinator garden to bring in butterflies and feed bees! Song birds will also feed on the seeds in the fall.

Next up we have False Indigo, Amorpha fruticosa. Growing best in full sun and moist soils, it can reach up to 15' tall and just as wide. Its large purple blooms are highlighted by golden pollen. This is my native plant replacement for the invasive butterfly bush due to its similar size, flower, and attractiveness to pollinators. It's also a host plant to many species including the Silver-spotted Skipper, Gray hairstreak, and Hoary edge skipper.

You can find these beautiful plants and more on Saturdays 9-4. 5911 Mount Hermon Church Rd Durham

Southern Blue Flag Iris, Iris virginica, is starting to bloom in the nursery. These native Iris can be found all along the coast of NC and inward west into the Piedmont as far as where I'm located here in Orange County. Many don't consider iris to be much of a host plant, but it does support quite a few insect species including many butterflies and moths. https://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/plant\_insects/plants/iris\_spp.html It's purple blooms emerge starting mid April and will typically bloom for about 3 weeks. It grows best in moist soils in full sun, but will tolerate some shade.

Another native Iris that I have available is Dwarf Iris, Iris verna v. Smalliana. Similar to the Dwarf Crested Iris, but with more slender leaves and smoother petal. Dwarf Iris prefers part sun with rich, moist soils, but is a bit more tolerant of drought than most Iris. These are mostly found in the Mountains of NC. Flowers emerge late winter/early spring before the leaves.

You can find both of these for sale on Saturdays 9-4 through the end of May at 5911 Mount Hermon Church Rd in Durham. You can view the entire inventory and/or order in advance through my website. https://www.knottybynaturetrees.com/category/all-products
