"On The Bench" Update: Community Made Bus Stop Benches!

A few cool things have happened in the past few months with "On The Bench," so I wanted to share an update!

“On The Bench” is a program created through a partnership from three local non-profit organizations: Play NC, Bull City Woodshop, and Bike Durham. The program is designed to build and distribute locally-made wood benches to bus stops that need them in Durham, NC. “On the Bench” hopes to improve conditions for our public transit system and provide a solution to a significant problem in the community, while also spreading awareness for our charity partners.

In January, I was inspired by this Reddit post to start building benches for bus stops. That lead to a Play NC partnership with Bull City Woodshop and Bike Durham, the founding of the "On The Bench" program for Play NC, buckets of sawdust, and a lot of positive feedback from everyone that has learned about the project!

I designed the bench, but "bench building" falls outside of the general "sports and games" focus for Play NC (my charity), so Bull City Woodshop appropriately took over the main operations of the program and actual bench building. The program has been very successful for BCW, with two previously sold out classes and being awarded two significant community grants: $5,000 from a Durham City Mini-Grant and $4,000 from a Duke "Doing Good" Grant. BCW is holding at least two more FREE sessions (September 12 and October 17) and hope to add at least one more before the end of the year, if they sell out these FREE classes. We currently have 18 benches "out in the wild" / actively being sat upon at a bus stop, and we can build 10 benches per class, so these classes will increase our total to 38 benches for the year. They sold out quick last time, so sign up soon!

Sign up to build a bench, it's fun! I'll be there to help! https://bullcitywoodshop.org/pages/community-woodworking-classes-bull-city-woodshop

We have had a few benches damaged that had to be returned to the shop for minor repairs, but nothing major and most of the materials were able to be salvaged. Also, despite initial worries, no benches have been stolen. Plenty of graffiti, of course, but I call that free artwork and we're looking into ways to make these benches even more colorful, vibrant, and special to help discourage any serious vandalism. We have a goal of making at least 50 during our first year, so please register and help us fill the demand for at least one more class! If we get stuck at #48, I'll just make the last two myself.

To view a map of the current installments, with photos and addresses on the bus stops, check out the embedded map at playdurham.com/bench/

Our 4 newest benches were just installed along Fayetteville Road, between Highway 54 and Woodcroft Parkway. These have our fancy new information plaques, with a QR code to report damages or make a donation, and represent the first benches that we've added for the South Durham side of town!

Separately from "On The Bench," bench-making has also been popular enough that BCW has expanded their Woodshop Wagon program (the workshop comes to you) to feature benches. So far, BCW has had two local neighborhoods sign up to and make shared community benches for their streets, cul-de-sacs, and shared paths. BCW also started a program at the Emily K Center, where 6th–8th grade students get hands-on experience building benches for local bus stops. These benches will be everywhere!

How can you help?

Let me know if you have any questions or have any other ideas to help! I'll post another update once we build Bench #50! Thanks for all of your support!

TLDR: I had an idea to build wooden benches for bus stops in January. Half way through the year, we have partnered with >5 local organizations, hosted woodworking classes for more than 500 people, built >20 bus benches (18 currently being used by bus riders), expanded to hosting community bench workshops for local neighborhoods, received >$11,000 in donations / grants to support the project, and we are on pace to install 50 benches in Durham by the end of the year.

Bonus: The last photo is my favorite thing to do with the scraps - make a baby bench!

Gov. Stein signs HB 162 (the “parking lot bill”) into law!

HB 162, also known as the “parking lot bill,” was signed into law today after nearly unanimous, bipartisan support in both the state house and senate. The law prohibits cities and counties from enforcing minimum parking space requirements. This allows for the construction of more homes/apartments, the preservation of more trees, a reduction in stormwater runoff, and reduces development costs.

BUYER BEWARE, do NOT hire The Grout Medic

If you’re looking for someone to update caulking or grout in your bathroom, DO NOT hire The Grout Medic.

I hired them to regrout and recaulk my shower. Less than two years later, the silicone completely failed, peeling off in long strips during routine cleaning. The back of every piece was covered in black mold, and the grout underneath had begun crumbling. The shower was in better condition before they worked on it.

Their response was even more disappointing. Instead of standing behind work that failed WAY prematurely, they hid behind a one-year caulking warranty and even nitpicked the exact amount I paid rather than addressing the obvious workmanship concerns. I was simply offered another proposal to pay them again to fix their failed work.

A professional shower restoration should last far longer than this. The quality of the work was poor, and their customer service was even worse. If you’re looking for a company that stands behind its workmanship when something goes wrong, this wasn’t my experience.

Looking for an approachable, neurodivergent-affirming therapist? Now accepting new clients! 🌿

Hi everyone! I’m Kaitlin, a licensed therapist (LCMHC-A) practicing out of Loblolly Wellness. I wanted to share my flyer for anyone currently looking for a supportive, down-to-earth space to work through burnout, body disconnection, or just life's messy middles.

I believe therapy shouldn't feel like a clinical interrogation—there is plenty of room for genuine laughter, authentic human connection, and working with your brain, not against it. As an unmasked neurodivergent clinician with a background in teaching, I love working with young adults, the neurodivergent community, and folks looking for LGBTQIA+ affirming care.

How I work: Highly collaborative, trauma-informed care integrating Somatic, ACT, and Person-Centered Therapies.

Insurances accepted: Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna/Evernorth, Aetna, and MedCost (Self-pay rate is $150).

PDA-Informed Child Psychiatrist?

I know it’s a long shot, but our little one has recently been determined to be living with Level 2 autism with a PDA profile, and I was curious as to whether anyone else in the area might be aware of a PDA-informed psychiatrist who might be able to help.

We’ve met with others with experience in complex autisms, but because of the unique nature of PDA–and the fact that it’s only now beginning to be studied and acknowledged in the US–we’re having an extremely difficult time finding one able to support the lil guy’s needs.

Anyone have any recommendations? It would be so deeply appreciated.

Restaurant with space for meetings

Back with the perennial question of "where can our club meet in Durham?" I've searched recent history to no avail. So.

What restaurants have space and inclination to accommodate a club or group meeting on a regular basis? Maybe 20+/- people? I know of Parizade and Bullock's; the former a little too chichi, the latter a little too downhome for some. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Looking at moving here: some stuff Google won't tell you

I'm a native whose career who post grad school lived other places then boomeranged back. For context: there was no I-40 when I grew up in these parts.

Some stuff you need to know if the area is in your sights.

* The Triangle is a series of small towns around Raleigh and Durham and the unincorporated area known as RTP that is a high technology park.

* Downtown Raleigh and Durham are dwarfed by RTP in the number of jobs there. The old development rules encouraged low slung development below the tree canopy.

* if you have an urban fetish (like seriously we want like a walkable neighborhood with with like bars and like restaurants and parks) - many of these areas are in high demand and expensive. We have a number of new fake urban centers but they lack the character of 100 years of development.

* Real Estate agents are barred from talking about the schools by their ethics rules. I am not an agent. Western Wake County has a reputation for ultra high SAT scores and also hothoused kids and cheating scandals.

* Many folks look at the rankings and get locked in on Cary. The lock in is a shame - because that means a group of folks are trying to compete for housing in a very small geographic area. Apex, Holly Springs and Fuquay-Varina (few-kway) are all valid.

* this is a crass over generalization as people vary. but the western part of the Triangle (Orange and Durham) is in general more progressive than Wake. Wake is more moderate with it getting more conservative as you go east. Why does this matter? If you're a loud activist ready to protest at the drop of a hat: people in Holly Springs will smile and tell you to have a great day. People in Durham have placards already made up.

* East Raleigh and East Durham are the most economically challenged areas. Gentrification happens slowly and noisily.

* before you put an offer on a house:

  1. download Google Maps. Spend some time to know what a dump and a sewerage treatment plant look like from the satellite view.
  2. Download the county GIS app so you can put in an address and see who owns it what is next to you. If it's the Department of Transportation or the city - get to googling. It could be a freeway.

* before you chose a town, know where you're going to work. Your commute will influence your life.

* Reddit is not a Taco Bell. It is also not an apartment rental service. If I read another post that someone with shitty credit is looking for a private landlord to cry and avoid an eviction for someone seeking under $1800 rent - I will have read 4,000 too many of the same post. It's sad.

* We've had people moving here for years. IBM's relocation in the 60s built North Raleigh. Our Universities attract talent and many want to stay here.

Welcome. Be polite please.

Looking for wasp removal recommendations

I have a wasps’ nest under a deck with practically no access under it due its low clearance. My normal pest control company said they don’t deal with wasps or hornets.

Any recommendations for someone to come out and eradicate them?

Trying to break into biotech manufacturing from automotive manufacturing—what else should I be doing?

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some honest feedback on what I can do to improve my chances of getting into an entry-level biotech or pharmaceutical manufacturing role.
Here’s my current situation:
I’m currently a Set-Up Operator II at an automotive manufacturing company and have about 4 years of manufacturing experience.
My work involves machine setup, quality checks, troubleshooting, precision measuring tools, following SOPs, and working in a production environment.
I’ve completed OSHA 10 and OSHA 30.
I’m currently taking the BioWork certificate course through Wake Tech to learn GMP, cleanroom practices, documentation, and biotech manufacturing fundamentals.
I’ve updated my resume to better highlight transferable skills like GMP knowledge, SOP compliance, quality systems, root cause analysis, and manufacturing experience.
I’ve been applying to companies like Novo Nordisk, Biogen, FUJIFILM Diosynth, Catalent, KBI Biopharma, Labcorp, and several others in North Carolina.
My goal is to get into biotech manufacturing, ideally in the RTP area. I’m willing to start in an entry-level manufacturing associate or operator position if it gets my foot in the door.
A few questions:
Is there anything on my resume or background that stands out as a weakness?
Are there certifications or skills that would make a noticeable difference beyond BioWork?
Is there a better strategy than simply applying online?
Should I be working with staffing agencies to get my first biotech job?
If you were hiring for an entry-level manufacturing role, what would make someone with my background stand out?
I’m not expecting to skip the line—I know I have to earn it. I just want to make sure I’m focusing my time and effort on the things that actually increase my chances instead of spinning my wheels.
I appreciate any advice from people already working in biotech or pharmaceutical manufacturing. Thanks!

Communities for active 55+ parents?

Looking for ideas for areas my parents could consider for their next home.

My parents are thinking about moving to the triangle area from Wilmington in the next couple years. They are very active in their late 50s, love tennis, restaurants and live music. Walkable areas would be a plus. They are open to townhomes or houses under 600k if possible. They would prefer to be east-ish of Durham. Doesn’t necessarily need to be a 55+ community. Any ideas for areas my parents could look into?

Clubbing in the summer??

Hey guys! I’m trying to take a friend clubbing in either Durham or Chapel in a week or two. What are the best clubs to go to during the summer? Since it’s not college season and less ppl are going out. We like it best when it’s crowded and are both gay (but not limited to gay clubs just wherever is the most fun). Does anyone have any recommendations? I’m from the Charlotte area so I’m also not the most familiar w the clubs in this area but it’s where we will be.

Thanks in advance!!

Fascist/Nazi Band Booked to Play at Chapel of Bones

Chapel of Bones is a metal venue in Raleigh. In August, they’ve listed a show featuring the band True Iron Will. Metalheads will know about the website Encyclopedia Metallum, which provides information about virtually every metal band. Here is a link to the encyclopedia page for this band.

For those unfamiliar with metal, there is a subgenre called Black Metal, which this band plays. Within black metal, there is a large fascist and Nazi subcurrent called NSBM (national socialist black metal), and many bands that don’t explicitly play NSBM are still loosely affiliated with it, sympathize with it, and so on.

Looking at True Iron Will’s encyclopedia page, you can see that their latest album has a song honoring the “blood flag” — aka the Nazi Blutfahne — as well as a song about “Vinland.” Vinland refers to early Norse settlements in North America, but it has turned into a whole thing on the extreme right — basically, it has become a name for an imagined “golden” Aryan past from which society has fallen and to which white nationalists wish to return.

More concerning is that their guitarist runs an even more explicitly Nazi band called Lost Hierarchy. That band is signed to a dedicated Nazi label, Winter Solace Productions, which releases music from bands with names like “Aryan Kommando 88” (where 88 is an infamous dogwhistle for “heil hitler,” since h is the 8th letter of the alphabet 88 = h) and “Einsatzgruppen.” The name of one of their records, “Victory Sun,” is itself a dogwhistle for Nazi iconography, as that term is variously used to refer to the swastika, the black sun (sonnenrad), and various riffs on the swastika like the kolovrat, used by bands trying to fly under the radar a bit more. (In the kind of quasi-religious/spiritual form of Nazism common in black metal, the swastika is taken to be a representation of the sun, which is treated as a sacred source of energy, hence lots of references to the sun in NSBM and NSBM-adjacent black metal). The main man is also on Instagram, where he can be seen wearing merch from dedicated Nazi bands like Bilskirnir and Peste Noire, wearing a shirt calling Mohammed a pedophile, and praising the NSBM band Kaevum, whom he thinks released the best album of 2025. I would link to his profile, but I believe that violates Reddit policy.

I emailed the venue to express concerns about this nearly three weeks ago and have received no response. By my lights, no band like this should be given a place and a platform in our community.

🚨Update on stolen Bari Sax, Please Share!🚨

🚨 UPDATE + PLEASE SHARE 🚨

Last week my partner posted about my P. Mauriat Le Bravo baritone saxophone and Vandoren B5 bari mouthpiece being stolen from my truck in Durham, NC on the morning of June 29th around 8:45am. The response from everyone here in Bullcity was incredible, thank you!

Here is where things stand:

We have surveillance footage of the suspect attempting to sell the horn at the Tuba Exchange in Durham. We tracked it to National Pawn on Guess Road where it was sold for $600 to a man driving a late model silver Audi in the parking lot.

Police have been involved throughout and have collected footage from multiple locations. The case is active and they have the serial number on file.

To whoever bought it from the parking lot of National Pawn on Guess Road:

We just want the horn back. That's it. If you purchased this saxophone recently and this sounds familiar, please DM me. No drama, no trouble, no questions asked. You bought it in good faith and we understand that.

For everyone else:

If you see a P. Mauriat Le Bravo baritone sax listed anywhere, on Marketplace, Craigslist, Reverb, OfferUp, or anywhere else, please do not buy it and DM me immediately.

This horn means everything. Please share. 🙏

Dash cam recommendations

Hi all!

There have been a lot of really kind people posting dash cam footage of accidents they caught on tape or providing "JUSTIFIED" PSAs

I am looking into getting an affordable dash cam and was looking for recommendations. Ideally $80 or less (heavy on the less).

Which ones do y'all like?

InTown Suites in Raleigh is Trash!

Tw: Graphic Language

For context, we came back from work only to find out that our card was deactivated early. We only had one more day left in the room, and we are about to move in, just waiting to hear from the landlord to let us know that our apartment is ready, but it would have been nice for us to have our last day to rest, pack up, clean up and move.

Instead me, my fiancé and several other people were locked out of their rooms with no property manager to help. They fired the previous one, failed to provide back up or communicate this to any of their other coworkers, so we ended up having to call the police so that she could contact the maintenance man so that he could unlock everyone's door. We got into our room around 10:30 on Thursday night.

One guest was outside since 4 p.m waiting to get a key, he didn't get to his room until 11 or so.

An elderly couple was trapped outside and needed their medication. The police had to call EMS so he could get a breathing treatment because there was smoke outside and he couldn't breathe. His wife was terrified of him going to the hospital without her while she was stuck outside.

We talked to the property manager the next day, June 5th . The maintenance man corroborated our story amd gave us our deposit back, however they never took the keys back and never told the new property manager who tried to kick us out but, nobody was there because it was after hours 🙄

This area is rough as it is, we don't need to be paying these high ass prices that they keep increasing by $10 every week it's ridiculous! On top of other shady practices they have they have the worst and I mean worst roach infestation I have ever witnessed, it's like the Orkin man be making them mad or something because they do not care about none of that.

I want to make a case against InTown Suites and if anyone wants to help lmk, I got evidence for days and am making a detailed report to the NC DOJ File a Complaint Portal (not BBB Accredited, go figure) and i got this video posted on my Facebook, Instagram and TikTok as well as made a review and posted there, went through all the steps of reporting but I want corporations to start being held accountable and its up to US to do that, these reps won't listen? We'll make them. But I need to do this the right way. Any help would be appreciated.
