I’ve started making friends with a crow

Hoping to continue my progress building trust. They have been visiting me daily now for 3 weeks.

I made a field guide for my local coastal invasive plant species.

Got into a deep dive about the weeds and uninvited plants taking over my local wetlands and decided to make something to educate people about them.

I had reached out to my local conservation group, learned way too much about root systems, and turned it into a little illustrated field guide. Some of these have been quietly ruining everything for decades.

I made a field guide for my local coastal invasives.

I had fun reaching out to my local conservation group and getting info on the most common invasive plants to find in my area and learning more about them.

After spending the time illustrating and painting each entry I designed it into this field guide with some humor here and there.

I created another field guide for my local invasive plant species

I’ve been getting more into local ecology and invasive plant species in coastal Southern California. These seven are some of the most common ones I encounter, many of which people don’t realize are invasive at all.

All illustrations are original, hand drawn in pen and ink and painted in watercolor. The field guide format is something I’ve been developing through my Covey Natural Sciences series. If you saw the rock field guide I posted here a while back, this one is a bit more informational but I couldn’t help roasting the plants a little along the way.

Swipe through for individual plant entries including some notes on how to remove them if you find any in your area. Resources at the end for further reading.

I made a PSA for doomscrollers to get outside.

Grass not included. Results may vary.

I suspect aliens are in my neighborhood so I made this "fake" wanted poster. Real data included.

The Garibaldi: or also known as Hypsypops Rubicundus.
This is California's state fish. Highly protected. Highly suspicious.

These fish are bright orange and make no attempt at blending in with the local aquatic wildlife. They almost seem too out of place to make sense. The fact that they are so strictly protected leads me to believe there is something hidden about them through government collusion.

This is why I have studied this specimen and am trying to make the truth known to the people. I have studied their whereabouts, their mannerisms, and even their frequency signals under the guise of a government agency I have crafted called the California Aquatic Intelligence Division.
This is not government sanctioned for obvious reasons.
And so, I am taking matters into my own hands.

The design of the poster, agency logo, and Illustration of the suspect was all done by my hand. I encourage you to read through the data I have collected and form your own opinions.

The truth is out there.

A government agency I invented is tracking the Garibaldi as a possible extraterrestrial species. Here is their criminal record.

The Garibaldi, or Hypsypops Rubicundus, is California’s state fish. Highly protected. Highly suspicious.

These fish are bright orange and make no attempt at blending in with local aquatic wildlife. They almost seem too out of place to make sense. The fact that they are so strictly protected by the State of California leads me to believe there is something hidden. Something concealed through government collusion.

This is why the California Aquatic Intelligence Division exists.

I have studied this specimen’s whereabouts, mannerisms, and frequency signals under the guise of a government agency of my own design. The seal, the field documentation format, the signal data, and the illustration of the suspect were all created by my hand.

This is not government sanctioned. For obvious reasons.

And so I am taking matters into my own hands. Read through the data and form your own conclusions. The truth is out there.

I collect rocks and have for years. Each one gets to stay because something about them spoke to me and I couldn’t leave them behind.

Eventually I started painting them in watercolor and giving them names. Then personality assessments. Then Latin classifications. Then measurements.

Gerald is chronically unavailable. Midge is too powerful to stop. Bernard has opinions about everything. I documented their traits as accurately as my limited geological taxonomy knowledge would allow. Midge is small and ancient and has a Mohs hardness of 10+, the highest achievable grade. Her luster is listed as blinding which is highly correct.

It’s a field guide for rocks with personalities. I made it because nature is strange and deserves to be taken seriously, especially when it fits in your pocket to take home like treasure.

I love nature and I’ve always collected rocks. Each one feels like it has its own character so I started painting them in watercolor and thought it would be funny to treat them with the same seriousness as a real field guide. Complete with Latin names, measurements, and personality assessments.

Gerald is chronically unavailable. Midge is too powerful to stop. Bernard has opinions about everything. I tried to bring out these personality traits through what limited geological taxonomy knowledge I have (ex. Midge is small and powerful so she has a hardness of 10+, the highest grade you can achieve. And a luster of “blinding”.)

It was a fun way to blend my love of nature, watercolor painting, and my sense of humor into one thing.
