My personal experience with Paroxetine [35M]

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to share my personal experience, because I’ve been taking paroxetinee for a little over two years now, and even though I can’t say for sure that it’s the reason I’m in remission today, I can certainly tell you about its effects on me.

I’ve been suffering from depression—probably undiagnosed—since my early teens.

I likely suffer from CPTSD, with difficulties expressing my emotions and managing relationships with others in general. I’ve also had trouble accepting the use of SSRIs and any medication adjustments related to mental health, mainly due to my family’s cultural background.

In 2023–2024, I went through a breakup and experienced significant social isolation that I found difficult to break out of. The main symptom was episodes of severe dissociation (3–4 hours of staring blankly, doing nothing—not even doom-scrolling); but I also experienced anxiety attacks, sometimes with physical symptoms (difficulty breathing, feeling like I was sweating).

I don’t think paroxetine made me feel better; rather, it helped me stop dissociating and get back out into the world, which then allowed me to form connections with new people, regain self-esteem and confidence, and only then overcome my depression.

Here is a breakdown of my treatment by period:
- 2022: psychotherapy sessions (once a week)
- April 2024: 20 mg of paroxetine (1 year) + 2 months of complete leave from work
- April 2025: 40 mg of paroxetine (~4 weeks) + 4 months of complete leave
- August 2025: 40 mg of paroxetine + 7 months of therapeutic part-time work (first 40%, then 60%).
- April 2026: gradual tapering of medication (~3 months) + return to 100% work
- June 2026: 0 mg + reduced frequency of psychotherapy sessions (once a month)

Starting with 20 mg helped stabilize my mood swings and significantly reduce episodes of dissociation. But I think it was only when I increased the dose to 40 mg—around April 2025—that I was truly able to regain control of my life.

Before starting paroxetine, I had already been tracking my mood on a scale of 1 to 5 for a year using an app (Daylio), where I meticulously logged everything I did and how I felt (5 to 10 times a day!). It was an obsession, and, unsurprisingly, I stopped using it at the same time I started feeling better (around April 2025). As a data scientist, I (of course) made extensive use of this data and think it’s interesting to share some of it with you: https://www.reddit.com/r/paroxetine/comments/1udnmx9/my_personal_experience_with_paroxetine_35m/

Physical side effects experienced while taking paroxetine: near-impossibility to ejaculate, sensitivity to heat, sweaty hands, excessive sweating, dizziness, and fatigue—especially at the beginning (~2 months).

Effects during paroxetine withdrawal: dizziness, fatigue, a few rare “brain zaps” (the ones I experienced felt mostly like a sudden, jerky vision; they were very distinct and lasted only about a week, when I had truly tapered down to 0 mg), and a return of much greater penile sensitivity.

Gradual tapering: weekly schedule with High|Low dosing (e.g., 40|30 mg).
H|H|H-> H|H|L-> H|L|H-> H|L|L-> L|L|L-> ...
40|40|40 -> 40|40|30 -> 40|30|40-> 40|30|30 -> 30|30|30 -> ...

Disclaimer: Below 20 mg, paroxetine is considered to be no longer effective (at least for a 1.80m / 80kg man). It is, however, extremely important to continue taking it to avoid withdrawal symptoms (which can kick pretty hard with this specific molecule), since paroxetine has a half-life of approximately 24 hours.

  1. Fig 1: what will interest all you nasty fellas (my sex life), but helped me tremendously in order to understand why I was feeling insecure with my partner until I figured out paroxetine clearly WAS playing a role in my libido (massive drop right when the treatment started)
  2. Fig 2: general trend component of the mood (1 being really sad ; 5 being extatic)
  3. Fig 3: general evolution of the mood, using several temporal perspectives
  4. Fig 4: 14-day simple moving average of the mood, with its volatility channel
  5. Fig 5: box plot distribution per time of day
  6. Fig 6: a very interesting graph about mood volatility, where you can very clearly see overall volatility plummeted with the introduction of paroxetine (meaning an overall more neutral mood which precisly is the molecule's role and prevents crisis)

Physical side effects experienced while taking paroxetine: near-impossibility to ejaculate, sensitivity to heat, sweaty hands, excessive sweating, dizziness, and fatigue—especially at the beginning (~2 months).
