Jean falls for Peter easily, because she takes his words to heart. Having nowhere else to go, she turns back around and returns to his apartment, asking if she can stay with him. Initially, he'll decline because a lousy apartment like his isn't the ideal place for her, but she wouldn't care about that. Eventually, he's convinced and agrees to have Jean as a roommate (on the condition that he sleeps on the couch while she's on the bed).
In Peter's case, his mind is still hung on Ned and MJ, but he'll squeeze in a new factor in his headspace from here, which is Jean. He won't feel as alone as he was before, now that there's someone sharing the same pain living with him everyday.
The more Jean spends time with Peter, the more attached she feels. And everyone knows that with great attachment, comes great possessiveness. She starts looking forward to spending time with him every night, after his hero duties are done and when it's just time for him to rest. Their interactions would start out friendly, then touch on teasing each other, to being flirty from her side. Peter being Peter, would respectfully maintain his distance because he's a gentleman and he's still loyal to MJ.
Jean would feel conflicted because on one hand, she doesn't want Peter thinking about anyone else but her. At the same time, she'd feel guilt about it because she doesn't have any right to decide who he loves... not after what she did. Of course Peter wouldn't fall for the villain in his story (she'd think it's her), the one who gave him false hope and then took it away.
And so, while it hurts her inside that she doesn't have Peter to herself, Jean chooses to focus on the present and reminds herself that he is with her right now, nowhere else.
She'll enjoy this for as long as possible and maybe in the future, it won't hurt as much when he eventually does leave her... (Jean is dreading that day and hopes it never comes)
Meanwhile, the more Peter thinks about MJ, the more his mind naturally drifts to Jean and the laughs that they now share in the evening, when he returns to the apartment. He finds himself no longer staring hopelessly at MJ, because his eyes are glued to his phone more frequently during the day, when he and Jean have an online chat or even a video call.
It wouldn't be long before his feelings for MJ get passed on to Jean, but he'd be stubborn in thinking that he's still in love with the former. Eventually, when he gets the idea to try and speak with MJ again, he decides against it because he'll be reminded of her words to him... she doesn't know him, plain and simple.
Peter finally gives up and tells himself it's time to move on, even if it hurts so much inside. He forces himself to think of something else, and his mind goes to Jean. He invites Jean to go out and do a city patrol with him (mainly to distract himself), which she is a bit hesitant to accept at first.
To both of their surprise, they both ended up enjoying the patrol and they actually worked well as a team, dealing with criminals quicker and more efficiently. Peter jokingly remarks that they can make it a permanent gig (to save him more energy), and Jean says, "Why not? As long as you take me out to dinner."
Of course, Jean said that as a joke, while Peter actually takes it seriously. He asks if that's all she wants, and Jean realizes her mistake. She tries to take it back, but Peter successfully gets her to admit it. He asks if she's fine with just a normal diner because he doesn't have the money for a more formal restaurant, but Jean waves it off and accepts.
Their dinner takes place the following day, and they share stories about their lives while having a blast with each other's company. Jean thanks Peter for the meal and they return to the apartment, unaware that they held hands the entire time they walked back.
They stay awake for a bit longer, while they're both on the bed. Jean succumbs to sleep first and Peter was going to leave her be, but she holds his hand and subconsciously asks him to stay with her. Too tired to explain why he shouldn't be on the bed with her, Peter joins her under the sheets with a red face.
Jean snuggled right next to him and hugged him close, leaving Peter more embarrassed but unable to push her away. Eventually, he lets it be and just before he could close his eyes, his mind comes to a realization.
Having dinner with Jean and spending time with her made him feel happy, which is something he thought he would never experience again... not with MJ having her own life now and completely away from him. And come to think of it, he's been happy and gave a lot of smiles ever since Jean returned to his life, but not when he's around MJ.
Too tired to think about it further, Peter shrugs and plants a quick kiss on the top of Jean's head, before letting sleep take him. He didn't know when, or how his feelings for Jean and MJ changed in such short time, but he had all the time in the world to figure things out.
The End... for now.
...could the Phoenix Force theoretically purify Peter's blood? If my memory serves me right, the reason why he's so afraid to start a family is because his blood is radioactive, but what if his partner harnessed a cosmic power that symbolizes life? 👀
...then Logan, whoever's playing him in the MCU, will leave Jean alone for good. Unlike Cyclops, Spider-Man is more than capable of taking down Wolverine in a straight up fight and embarrass him. Logan has too much pride to risk losing to someone younger than him just to chase a girl. 😤
But I'd like to see Logan try, lmao.
