Questions About Retro Gaming with the Sega Dreamcast, in 2026?
This is a fairly new idea for me, but I'm considering the idea of dipping my toes into retro gaming and buying a Dreamcast and a couple of its games that I've always wanted to play.
Concern around RAM and other hardware shortages and the rising cost of modern gaming are a pretty big factor here, and many of these games are currently unavailable in a modern form. Also might be a fun and relatively affordable hobby. Not sure.
My thing is, I've never really gotten into buying older consoles before, and I don't know what all will and won't work in modern times, and what all peripherals I would need to purchase to make everything work.
I'll list some of the questions I have:
- Will a Dreamcast play just fine on a modern smart TV? I looked around the back of our one TV and saw that it has those old red, white and yellow "circular plugs" that game systems used to connect to your TV with back in the day before HDMI became the standard. Is that all it would take to get a Dreamcast up and running on a modern TV?
Going along with that, do Dreamcast games typically display alright on a newer TV screen? I'm guessing it would be in a square in the middle of the screen, with the sides of the TV screen left blank during gameplay?
- What would I need to do to bring my Dreamcast online? And what all services and games have functioning online play nowadays?
I'd read about the need to purchase some sort of broadband adapter (?) for the dial-up connection, and that it could potentially get pricey. But that there might also be other methods. I'm not sure where to begin with this.
- I imagine I'd also want to get a memory card for the Dreamcast, though admittedly I don't know much about those, either. I know there are at least two different kinds of memory cards; the ones with the screen and buttons on them that can be used as some kind of handheld game device as well, and the more plain ones.
I don't know anything about their storage capacity or what all I could store on one of them. Or what functions the "handheld" memory card might have with certain games.
- Where it gets really confusing is compatibility between different regions of software and hardware. I know the Dreamcast is region-locked, but people talk as though that's pretty easy to circumnavigate.
I was just sort of hoping to get a North American Dreamcast console in decent condition. And then, of course, compatible North American games. But I don't know how realistic this is nowadays?
- I started looking around and saw that Gamestop sells Dreamcasts on their website. Honestly, the prices they have for some of this stuff sounds pretty great. But I'm not sure whether that's a poor option for buying retro Dreamcast stuff from.
I would much rather like to buy games and things through EBay, or some other platform. I don't use Amazon. I'm not sure how much that would limit me? We also have a few retro gaming shops in the area that I could check out, though I have no idea what their selections would be like.
- So the 3 primary games I would want to get, the main ones that have kind of spurred this idea on for me, are:
Phantasy Star Online, Chu Chu Rocket, and Gauntlet Legends.
PSO I know I could play offline, but I've read that fans have maintained servers for the DC version of the game, and that you can still go online and play with other DC owners. ...How?
Also, I am confused over what PSO games I would need to purchase. I know there's PSO and PSO Version 2.0. Do you need both? Will 2 cover everything? Idk.
Does Chu Chu Rocket also have functioning online play these days, over fan servers?
- Not sure how far I would want to go with things, but if I did collect a few other games then the ones I might have in mind are:
Skies of Arcadia, Jet Grind Radio, the Powerstone games, the Evolution games, and maybe the Crazy Taxi games and Dead or Alive 2 for good measure. Seaman also sounds interesting, maybe.
I know the Sonic Adventure and Shenmue games are available on modern platforms these days, but I guess I would still keep them under consideration.
With all of that in mind, I'm not sure whether a Dreamcast memory card could hold data for all of those games or not.
I'm also not sure which of these games I could realistically find for a reasonable price, or at all.
- Lastly, would Dreamcast fans actually recommend giving this a shot, or no?
Is it worth trying to do, or is it more of a logistical and costly nightmare trying to retro game with the Dreamcast than anything else? Does it live up to the dream?
I had always wanted to get a Dreamcast when I was younger, and the interest only grew with time, as I learned more about its games and its legacy. What should have been a winning move, was somehow a failure - but also a beloved cult classic.
Just not sure if it's worth getting into in 2026. For all I know maybe most of the Dreamcast consoles are on their last legs these days, lol.
Thanks for reading, and I appreciate any feedback subreddit regulars have to give.
