Dreamcast seen in a commercial in 2026?
It’s a Dreamcast, right?

It’s a Dreamcast, right?
This is a fairly new idea for me, but I'm considering the idea of dipping my toes into retro gaming and buying a Dreamcast and a couple of its games that I've always wanted to play.
Concern around RAM and other hardware shortages and the rising cost of modern gaming are a pretty big factor here, and many of these games are currently unavailable in a modern form. Also might be a fun and relatively affordable hobby. Not sure.
My thing is, I've never really gotten into buying older consoles before, and I don't know what all will and won't work in modern times, and what all peripherals I would need to purchase to make everything work.
I'll list some of the questions I have:
Going along with that, do Dreamcast games typically display alright on a newer TV screen? I'm guessing it would be in a square in the middle of the screen, with the sides of the TV screen left blank during gameplay?
I'd read about the need to purchase some sort of broadband adapter (?) for the dial-up connection, and that it could potentially get pricey. But that there might also be other methods. I'm not sure where to begin with this.
I don't know anything about their storage capacity or what all I could store on one of them. Or what functions the "handheld" memory card might have with certain games.
I was just sort of hoping to get a North American Dreamcast console in decent condition. And then, of course, compatible North American games. But I don't know how realistic this is nowadays?
I would much rather like to buy games and things through EBay, or some other platform. I don't use Amazon. I'm not sure how much that would limit me? We also have a few retro gaming shops in the area that I could check out, though I have no idea what their selections would be like.
Phantasy Star Online, Chu Chu Rocket, and Gauntlet Legends.
PSO I know I could play offline, but I've read that fans have maintained servers for the DC version of the game, and that you can still go online and play with other DC owners. ...How?
Also, I am confused over what PSO games I would need to purchase. I know there's PSO and PSO Version 2.0. Do you need both? Will 2 cover everything? Idk.
Does Chu Chu Rocket also have functioning online play these days, over fan servers?
Skies of Arcadia, Jet Grind Radio, the Powerstone games, the Evolution games, and maybe the Crazy Taxi games and Dead or Alive 2 for good measure. Seaman also sounds interesting, maybe.
I know the Sonic Adventure and Shenmue games are available on modern platforms these days, but I guess I would still keep them under consideration.
With all of that in mind, I'm not sure whether a Dreamcast memory card could hold data for all of those games or not.
I'm also not sure which of these games I could realistically find for a reasonable price, or at all.
Is it worth trying to do, or is it more of a logistical and costly nightmare trying to retro game with the Dreamcast than anything else? Does it live up to the dream?
I had always wanted to get a Dreamcast when I was younger, and the interest only grew with time, as I learned more about its games and its legacy. What should have been a winning move, was somehow a failure - but also a beloved cult classic.
Just not sure if it's worth getting into in 2026. For all I know maybe most of the Dreamcast consoles are on their last legs these days, lol.
Thanks for reading, and I appreciate any feedback subreddit regulars have to give.
For me it’s Rippin’ Riders. Cool game, should have had a licensed soundtrack though like Tony Hawk or Burnout.
Just got a new VMU pro and I'm trying to get the emulators running, but all three (SMSplus, gnuboy, nofrendo) all result in a "relocation failed" error when I try to launch them on the device.
Anyone have any idea what's going wrong?
I saw this on AliExpress on sale for $10.96 usd, it looks like a new model of DreamPSU. I know that there are better options out there like robotretro. I might give it a try for that price.
Since Sony & Microsoft could be doing away physical copies,Dreamcast 2 would feature a Hybrid 4K Media: A system featuring physical media for collectors (e.g., 4K Blu-Ray or proprietary discs) alongside digital storefronts to attract users frustrated by all-digital ecosystems,4K Upscaling & Native Ports: Enhancing classic titles (like Shenmue or Sonic Adventure),Controller Evolution: Retaining the iconic Dreamcast controller shape with upgraded materials, modern rumble haptics, and a modernized built-in Visual Memory Unit (VMU),Integrated Store: Offering a low-cost, dedicated Sega game service with backwards compatibility for previous Sega consoles. When it does happen someday just make it happen.
I patched Hydro Thunder for VGA compatibility. But i found that there's no music. Any idea how to fix this?
Finally got my Dreamcast online last night and played some Quake III Arena. Thought I’d share 🥹 Was also using broadband adapter, HDMI converter cable and Opel portable router. What a great night 👏
Adopted this little guy from a client and gave him a new home. Absolutely in love! Obviously had to give him the full welcome of Code: Veronica and I gotta say, I’m so impressed!!
looks really cute, basically a dreamcast mini. It got two usb ports and the disc tray is actually functional!! bought a usb adaptor to go with my dreamcast controller, so i can use it with this little guy
Hello! I am located in the United States and I was hoping I can get some recommendations for VGA cables that are in stock that I can purchase to use my Dreamcast with my retrotink.
Thank you for the help!!
This happened the other day, but I had been wanting to own a Dreamcast for a while now yet I decided to try and start building an OG Xbox collection and focusing efforts on trying to get that since it’d be easier (and because the OG Xbox feels like the closest thing we got to a Dreamcast successor with all of the SEGA sequels on there like Shenmue 2 and Crazy Taxi 3). Low and behold someone local pinged me in a small server we’re both in and showed me a Facebook post from a few minutes ago from our local retro game store and I just knew I didn’t want to miss the chance to get one! It was $135 but I was able to trade in three games to knock it down to $100. I got NFL 2K with it so the total price was $105 but I’m happy to have saved a bit of money! The console works well and I ordered some CD-Rs for some other games (no way can I afford legitimate copies for some of these games lol)
My “main” game is PSO, but I also play a bunch of other games that I’d like to retain saves for. My goal is to make the VMU Pro my primary (only) VMU, and then use the second slot for a wireless adapter.
I’m concerned if it’s easy or feasible to move files over. It seems like PSO files are tied to the VMU but I don’t really see a lot of recent discussion on that. Has anyone moved a PSO file over and have it work from the VMU pro?
