Katana: a new GDEMU card manager (macOS-only)

Katana: a new GDEMU card manager (macOS-only)

I grew tired of waiting for GDMENUCardManager app (I loved using it for so long, so thanks to its developer) to process my SD card, and clicking Done at the end of every process, so I made my own GDEMU card manager for macOS. The main benefits are: native macOS app, looks and works like a Mac app, super fast because it caches as much as possible and only writes what has changed. Opening the app with your regular card happens in milliseconds, rebuilding the index happens in a second, which makes adding games and managing your card a pleasure. It also has support for managing multiple cards, and detecting duplicates in your files (both off by default). It's a FREE download, only for macOS. https://www.gingerbeardman.com/apps/katana/

The seahorse emoji has been found (in a 1988 word processor and its manual)

One of my hobbies is to dig into the long-forgotten past of emoji history in Japanese media. During this process I've uncovered multiple sets of emoji that predate the modern emoji timeline by over a decade.

Recently I bought a manual for Toshiba's Rupo JW 95F word processor (1988) as it contains the oldest currently known use of the word emoji next to a table of recognisable emoji. And there, amongst its emoji...is a seahorse!

Didact: renamed and improved display control menu bar app for macOS that works with any display (Apple silicon only)

TL;DR …new name, works with any display, customisable menu structure.

I made some improvements to make my display control app more straightforward, most things are now automatically detected, but you can follow a wizard to train it to work your monitor (and then share the config with the community). You can also edit and rearrange the menu to suit, hiding the items you don't use or putting the functions you want at the top.

Because of the added "learning" ability, I renamed it to Didact (it means "designed to teach") and it's also a play on the technology that is used to control the displays, which is called DDC.

>It has special support for BenQ RD-series (full Moon Halo support, Night Mode, Game & HDR color modes, and more) but has been confirmed to work with other BenQ displays and displays from other manufacturers.

Still only 520 KB on disk! 👌😎

Have fun,

New RD280UG display control app for macOS (Open Source)

In response to the bebenqli thread (a Linux TUI app for display control) I created my own display control app for macOS.

The app is structured in a way that it can be used in Cmd+D debug/listen mode to capture info, and new monitors can be added with a new JSON file. So adding support for your monitor is easy—you don't have to be a programmer. If extra work is needed at any point, I will do it.

Download is only 479 KB (official app is 404 MB)

Installed app is 532 KB on disk (official app is 936 MB).

So mine is over 1800× smaller on disk!

https://github.com/gingerbeardman/BtnQ

Supports: Apple silicon Macs only

Note: app is safe, notarized by Apple, but of course use at your own risk

Have fun!

Tsundoku – macOS app for sending bookmarks to Karakeep, Linkding, LinkAce, Shaarli, Wallabag

I've been self-hosting for years now and after becoming unhappy with Pinboard and after much searching (and activity in r/selfhosted) I landed on Linkding for my bookmarks. I was just missing a good way to submit to Linkding on macOS and the old app I was using for Pinboard was not compatible and it being Intel-only also meant its days were numbered.

So in late-2024 I wrote my own app and have been using it ever since.

In June 2025 I added support for services (Karakeep, LinkAce, Raindrop, Shaarli, Wallabag) and opened it up for TestFlight.

Finally, in April 2026 I released it on the App Store. It took a great deal of work and back and forth to get it approved because of the way it grabs the current page/title from your frontmost browser (Safari and Safari Tech Preview; Google Chrome including Beta, Canary, Dev; Microsoft Edge, Opera, Vivaldi; Arc, Brave, Comet, Dia).

All this, and it's only 520 KB on disk and uses minimal RAM and CPU!

The flow to add a new bookmark:

  1. Press global hotkey (configurable through System Settings)
  2. URL and Title are auto-filled
  3. Focus is already on Tags field, so type them with autocomplete
  4. (optional) Check "Private" and/or "To Read" and add Notes (wording varies by service)
  5. Cmd+Enter to submit!

If you're submitting a bookmark that already exists in your service, tags will also be pre-filled.

Note: I'm open to adding support for more services if they have good API documentation, online demo setup, and enough users.

Bundled with Tabulator, my local tab and bookmark manager: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app-bundle/web-head/id1894077899?ct=reddit&mt=12

This was part of my big launch of 20 apps and a screensaver on the same day and adheres to "Fits on a Floppy", my manifesto for small software.

Questions and thoughts appreciated!
