USAA's National Military Monument?

Who came up with this idea? Today I got another email from USAA about this "thing".

"USAA created The National Military Monument^((TM)) to honor the more than 41 million men and women who've served our country over the past 250 years. And your name will be on it.

"We opened the monument in Washington, D.C. on July 28 with millions of names from historical, public and veteran service sources. To respect USAA members’ privacy, we asked you to opt in and an incredible number of you did. We’re now going to automatically include your name to ensure your service is honored.

"Additionally, because of the overwhelming response, the monument will now be up through Veterans Day. Even more service members and military families will be able to experience this powerful tribute.

"If you prefer not to have your name displayed, email us at nationalmilitarymonument@usaa.com to have your name removed."

There's something about a commercial enterprise installing this thing on the National Mall, but it may be innocent and/or well-intentioned. Use of "TM" is for situations where you claim rights without a completed trademark registration. This may be the case because USAA doesn't want someone greedy grabbing the rights. It also can be used to establish first use in commerce.

Cirqa Trademark Not Final?

I went to the USPTO search site to take a look at the Cirqa's trademark status. There seems to be an AI software company that is also using "Cirqa" and it apparently caught the attention of a trademark examining attorney and Garmin is being asked to respond. The other applicant claims use in commerce in June of 2025.

USPTO is also suggesting Garmin to substitute some wording because; "This wording [edit: the wording in the application] is indefinite because it does not make clear what the goods and/or services are."

Best Buy Took a Pre-Order

Taking a hint from a member in Canada, I got online and made a Cirqa reservation with Best Buy. Their estimated date for store pickup here in Oregon is August 10. I had to work my way through a number of verification steps, and then wait a while for them to confirm that they had stock to fill my order. Confirmation email was at 10:38 pm this evening (Tuesday).

Cirqa: RTFM? (Which one?)

It might be useful to download and read the Cirqa manual. I found the most recent version (28 pages) here.

Circa Manual Version 1.

There is an older 20 page version (with 5 blank pages) on another Garmin page. It has fewer pages than the one I linked, probably because of the two-column layout. I think the normal Garmin layout is single column.

As a point of comparison, the VivoActive6 manual is 102 pages. I would consider both devices in about the same tier. That difference in pages is another indicator of Garmin's intent: Very much KISS.

Pondering A Return to Supernote

About 2 years ago I got interested in e-note devices when I noticed some Remarkable stuff at the local Best Buy. That got me down the rabbit hole looking at different devices, and the Supernote seemed to be the best of the bunch. I likes the way the Nomad worked an the way it handled notes and sketches. But I was looking for more functionality. And there were some Supernote aspects that I just didn't get.

I tried another brand of Android 10.3 and 7.8" and they have worked well. However, my personal digital device needs/preferences have changed and the lack of directly loadable Android apps is less of a concern.

I now have a rugged Samsung Galaxy Tab Active5 5G 8" tablet that is much better for the Android apps and still easy to carry around. My biggest concern with Supernote is the extent of reader support. I use Kindle reader, which I understand is included with the Nomad and the Manta. But I would like to have access to the AP, BBC, Economist, Guardian, Libby, and Reuters -- all of which I read with their respective Android Apps (some of those apps do struggle a bit with e-ink devices).

Getting down to a Nomad, a Manta, and the Samsung tablet would simplify my life a bit.

Comments and suggestions welcome!
