Civil War re-enactment - but where?

I took this photo in summer 1976, somewhere in the Welsh Marches, but I cannot remember where. I've visited Bewdley, Cleobury Mortimer, Tenbury Wells, Bromyard, Leominster, Leintwardine, Ludlow, Craven Arms, Richards Castle, Presteigne and so on via Google Street view, but have not been able to locate this view. Any suggestions?

Find guide on setup SSH with Linux Client and Windows Server

For a long time I have accepted the process of plugging and unplugging USB devices multiple times per day and walking between floors to transfer data between a Windows PC, where data is generated, and a Linux PC, where it is used. This generates obvious reliability problems.

Having just spent another unsuccessful day trying to address the OpenSSH error message ‘permission denied (public key)’, I’m turning to the wider community to get suggestions of where I can find an effective guide for this scenario. I have tried, over years, to look for such a guide which actually works, without success. However, I just cannot accept that this scenario has not been implemented and documented, by somebody, somewhere.

A note of caution before you reject my request on the basis of ‘it’s already well documented’; the scenario is highly specific: it must address setting up a connection, using OpenSSH, between a server running on Windows 10 and a client running on Linux, not the reverse. The Linux distro should preferably be Debian/Ubuntu based.  Setup, using a private/public key pair,  must be performed on the Linux PC, allowing for existing files in /etc/ssh which support existing successful OpenSSH implementations  in a Linux-only environment. It must address configuration settings within sshd_config, but please note I am more interested in getting data transfer to work than in hardening my network to  an industrial level. It must address how file and folder transfer from Windows to Linux, preferably using scp, is implemented, while addressing problems in the implementation. It must address how the most common problems, like ‘permission denied (public key)’  or failure to copy keys generated on the Linux client to the Windows Server, arise and are completely managed - this is the failing of all the available guides; they do not address failure modes. Those guides which do focus on the failures do not address a Windows server, Linux client configuration. Almost all the guides  display evidence of not having been  thoroughly tested. They don’t work; trust me, I have been trying this for a long time.

If you can point me to a suitable document source, within the above requirements, I would be immensely grateful, as would my legs, carpets and USB devices.

Another rural church in Kent in 1972: what and where?

https://preview.redd.it/cqx5j5di279h1.jpg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a58d0f60e1235ba1fa0f651e4e49634ed465483

This is a heavily cropped image of a rural church I photographed in early 1972. Location is most likely to be north-west Kent, within a radius of about 40 miles of Biggin Hill. I have examined images of about 150 churches that I managed to find in Google in this area; none of them fit. Any suggestions? (Image is heavily cropped to remove details of a private dwelling.)

This time with an image: rural church, NW Kent. What is it called?

https://preview.redd.it/we3lxezzo69h1.jpg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f613c1cc6dca7d84dae414dffa2d1c29fccb1817

On my first attempt to identify this church the above image was deleted by persons unknown, for reasons unknown. I hope this attempt has a better outcome. I took this photo in February 1972 somewhere in North West Kent; I was living in Biggin Hill at the time, in a job which meant I didn't go far in my free time - say 20 to 40 mile radius of BH at most. Google suggests it is St. James's in Shere, Surrey - not even close geographically or Architecturally.. Any proper suggestions?

How to find out what is owning camera before darktable sees it; win 10?

I have been doing tethered scanning from a Nikon DSLR into darktable 5.4.1 under Windows 10 successfully for some months now. My attempts to mount a USB-C connected Fuji X-T3 camera in place of the Nikon fail with darktable informing me: “failed to intialize Fuji Fujifilm X-T3 on port USB:001.005, likely causes are: locked by another application, no access to device etc”. Auto connect (correct term ?) is ‘off’ in Win 10 settings and I have the ‘take no action’ option set for when the X-T3 camera is connected.

An AI search on this error message also suggests that this could be caused by use of the wrong USB cable. I tried using the same cable to connect the X-T3 to a Linux Mint PC, also running darktable 5.4.1. At first darktable reported a similar error, but once I unmounted the camera in Nemo, darktable was able to access the camera and do tethered shooting. So, clearly, the issue under Win 10 is not cable-related.

I do not know how to identify what other applications or services are ‘grabbing’ the camera in Win 10 before darkatble can see it. How do I do this?

UEFI Security Certificate expiry next month - how to manage it?

This post is about how to handle next month’s UEFI Security Certificate expiry. My Alienware X51 R1 appears to have a UEFI BIOS. The latest BIOS level available from Dell is installed  - A14, dated November 2013, long before anybody worried about security certificate expiry.  If I query the secure certificate status in linux, via the command ‘sudo mokutil --kek  and --db  I see that all the certificates are of type CA 2011, so they will all expire next month. There is no UEFI firmware update on the Dell web-site for this model (“legacy”) of x51.

As I run this PC with secure boot disabled, will I be effected by the expiry of Security Certificates, or can I just ignore the expiry event?

Handling security certificate expiry on Gigabyte H81M-S2H

This post is about how to handle  UEFI Security Certificate expiry next month. My Gigabyte H81M-S2H appears to have a UEFI BIOS. The latest BIOS level available from Gigabyte is dated 8/11/2015 - long before anybody worried about security certificate expiry.  The BIOS  on this PC does not allow me to enable or disable secure boot. If I query the secure boot status in linux, via the command ‘sudo mokutil --sb-state’, I’m told: “Platform is in setup mode”.Querying the kek or db via Mokutil shows that no keys are installed. I understand that to change from setup mode to user mode I need to install the factory default Secure Boot keys, by changing the Secure Boot  Mode from Standard to Custom and then request the keys to be installed.  There is no such functionality in the UEFI BIOS on my PC. How do I proceed ?

If I don’t use secure boot, will my PC be effected by the expiry of Security Certificates, none of which are installed?

Can anyone (probably UK based) identify the two tallest office blocks on the right side of this image? It’s a view I took in 1969 from outside the dome of St.Paul's at the level of the whispering gallery. The viewing direction is approx. East-North-East, as can be verified by aligning with the building in the bottom left  hand corner. This building can be clearly identified and placed today, on Google street view, as being at the intersection of Cheapside and Forster Lane. I cannot distinguish the tall 2 office buildings on Google Street view now because of the huge development in the City since the photo was taken, together with the effect of the Bishopsgate ‘event’ in 1993. A Google reverse image search tells me that the left hand tower is CentrePoint - which I was inclined to accept except that CentrePoint is well to the west of St. Paul's. It can be seen as such in a Google Street view taken from the dome while looking in almost the opposite direction to a street view image which aligns with my photo. Any ideas if these 2 offices still exist and what they are?
