Cycle of the Unbroken demo is out now

Disclosure: I used AI to generate visual assets.

Cycle of the Unbroken is a deckbuilder inspired by games like Slay the Spire. Some key differences are

  • Heavy emphasis on combo stacking
  • Each card is an attack on your turn and counter attack on opponent's turn
  • Opponent is playing with a deck and has the same rules as you
  • Elemental damage types (like Dreamquest)
  • Stashing cards is free to encourage build experimentation

I've been developing this game for about 2 years. It's come pretty far but there is still something missing from the gameplay itself. I am hoping this group of deckbuilder fans can help me get the game from playable to great. I'd love to get your feedback. Right now I am focusing on writing the music (not using AI because I enjoy that part). I just hope this game finds a few people who enjoy it. I've had a blast making it.

Is starting with the scroll a mistake?

I think my new trailer is a lot better but maybe it's starting out too slow...Do you think it would be better if I just started with game footage?

Omni is way better for making sprites

Using my jupyter workflow on video instead of images. It's actually less work and looks way smoother. I think I have a samurai factory working :). There's a still a few things to work out to get multiple sheets seamless but I have some ideas there.

Boss test for my deck builder

I've been using my boss to debug some things and I like the way his combos hit. I think it highlights that while my game is inspired by the Slay The Spire, it is not a direct clone. One of the big differences is that the opponent uses a deck and can link combos the same way you can. I didn't try to defend here and this isn't a fair fight for debugging purposes, but you get the idea of how combos can chain (especially when you have stun cards). I almost have my debugging done for now and will move onto using Omni to make better animations soon.

Sharing my repo for making animations like this

https://gitlab.com/drnknmstrr/spritesheet_example

Yes, my first frame is wrong. This was true first run output of this notebook (with some clean up in Krita). If people have questions please ask them here. If there is interest I can work on this more and share more details. I'm finding this workflow to take a lot of work and I'm hoping to figure out something simpler.

This is showing off all the assets I've been making with Nano banana. I'm going to keep working on the sprites. They need more frames!

I wanted to get my store up before I started posting gameplay videos so here it is. https://store.steampowered.com/app/4650370/Cycle_of_the_Unbroken/

Everything needs work! What do you think of my disclaimer? Too much? All visual assets were initially generated using Nano Banana. I'll show you how I did anything you want to learn about. Just ask! Thanks for encouraging me to use the best tools available to make something I'm proud of.
