Noob trying photography be harsh & give me suggestions

I visited the lord of the rings in concert tonight in London (Return of the King) and was wondering what the instrument in the picture that looks like a wooden table on the right side of the stage is.

The musician who was playing it had his hands under the "table" but I could not see what he was doing.
