Has anyone’s parents had their U.S. tourist visa (B1/B2) renewal denied because of questions about their adult children studying in the U.S.?

Hi everyone,

I wanted to ask if anyone has experienced a situation like this recently.

Two friends of mine (from Colombia and Tunisia) told me that their parents recently went to their U.S. tourist visa renewal appointments, and the consular officer almost exclusively asked questions about my friends studying in the U.S.:

What are they doing in the U.S.?

Why have they been there for so long?

Details regarding their visa status and education progress.

In both cases, my friends have maintained continuous legal status by progressing through their studies (for example, starting with an English program and moving on to a Master's degree). Despite maintaining legal status, their parents' visa renewals were denied.

Has anyone else seen consular officers focusing heavily on international students when their parents apply to renew their tourist visas? Is this becoming more common? I’d appreciate any insights or shared experiences.

Thanks!

OPT - After period grace

I will complete my program on August 23 and submitted my OPT application on June 24 (biometrics completed July 17). What happens if my OPT is not approved before my 60-day grace period ends? Am I allowed to stay in the U.S. while it remains pending
