My child informed me the other day that they were assigned an assignment in their music history class to research and critique a song from a decade of the last 100 years. They told me that the 20s to 50s was boring. I kind of shrugged. they said that the 60s was just acoustic guitars and drums, to which I said the inclusion of electric guitar was a major part of 60s music. My child stared T me for a moment and said that they knew nothing about the 70s or 80s so there was nothing to talk about, so they chose the 90s.

Just last week after seeing the vinyls for Nirvanas nevermind and the first Weezer album, I started a discussion with my friends about the best albums of the 90s. I have been listening to 90s music exclusively since then and most of my musical leanings are from the 90s. so, the music of the 90s was at the forefront of my brain as I sat there listening to my child while wearing a Nirvana tour shirt.

My child then informed me that the only 90s song they could think of was “All I want for Christmas is You.” My soul deflated, my heart sank. what have I done as a parent where my child only knows one song from the 90s and it’s a meme song?

I proceeded to tell her about the Seattle bands leading the Alternative wave. About the industrial/techno that led to the music that they consume. About Rage against the machine and the gangsta rap and east/west coast rivalries. My child stared at me again and told me they were just going to do that Mariah Carey Christmas schlock. I just had to ask her “whats the frequency Kenneth?”
