FIP diagnosis via fecal sample

Hiya!

So my kitten died from severe anaemia. We were just about to test him for FIP but it turned out his anaemia was so bad, he'd need blood transfusion and even then, the vet couldn't guarantee it would help him. He was only 12 weeks and underweight from the beginning.

My vet team offered they kept his stool sample, he was hospitalised on Monday, and for another few days they can actually test it for FIP. It costs circa £180.

But as far as I know, FIP cannot be confirmed via fecal sample? Only coronavirus can? Which he already had confirmed.

Which is why I want to argue with the breeder to refund me for the kitten cause he sold me a sick kitten. The vet teams says he must have been sick, corona plus some bacteria, already when I got him.

Have diagnostic methods changed very recently? Can we actually even partially confirm FIP via poop?

Thanks

Coronavirus in kittens

Hello!

Shooting a shot. If you purchased your ragdoll kitten from a male breeder, Pets4Homes, around South East London, 6 kittens in the litter, and a dog in the photos, dates around 19.04-26.04, your kitten might have feline coronavirus. Mine has suspected FIP.

UPDATE: Yes, I know most cats have corona but you can do procautions to minimalise the risk, wean earlier, test etc. If we're selling ticking bombs, it's really bad.

My cat however died. I don't know if FIP but likely as he had coronavirus and was very bloaty, had a very severe anaemia and was already sold to me underweight.

Be careful y'all!

Corona plus campylobacter

Hello All!

So I have gotten a kitten at 8 weeks old (I know, controversial, please spare me). And since the beginning he had soft stools but his breeder kept telling me to:

- give him time as he just moved houses (fair)

- to deworm him

The kitten was rather playful, having appetite but just having poor stools.

Now, 2 weeks later and a 3-day stool sample test later, and a few depressive episodes later, he has been diagnosed with campylobacter & feline coronavirus.

We're hopefully starting antibiotics tomorrow but:

  1. What can I do to avoid coronavirus mutating into FIP? I fear the can gets really stressed in the shower (and I do have to wash his feet a lot) and he is very young which doesn't help his case.
  2. Could he get infected at my place (no other animals; even when I had guests, they won't have cats themselves)? Or has he most likely been infected when sold?
  3. What can I do to help my little baby? Now almost 11 weeks.

Thank you so much for kind help!

Hiya!

So my 9 weeks old kitten, a ragdoll, has a diarrhea. All rainbow colours of it really - orangy-browny; creamish; greenish, you name it. Sometimes very watery; sometimes more creamy and gluey/sticky. There was also one greenish that looked like a dried out long raisin?

He was dewormed at 4 weeks.

I did a mistake of giving him wet food (Hills) soon after he arrived at a new home (Day 2) because he didn't seem to be drinking much water and I know kittens with diarrhea (at that point he only had a soft stool but not full on diarrhea) are prone to dehydration.

Then I had 3 people over (my big anniversary birthday) and I thought his lethargy the next day was stress related (although he really behaved sociable and didn't look distressed). So thought his breeder that I'm in touch with - stress. I found from his breeder though that he was only dewormed at 4 weeks old cause his vet said there was no need for more frequent deworming since the cats were all indoor.

During his lethargy spree last weekend, he also stopped eating dry food (Wellness Core) so I tried tiny bit of Iams (mixed it with wet and old dry) and he ate some but then vomited 4-5 Iams biscuits.

So then I read to give pets with diarrhea rice & boiled chicken. And probiotic (Fortiflora). Which I have done. 0 improvement. In fact, he's pooping rice.

I dewormed him on Sunday, liquid Panacur but I misread the instructions and instead of 0.5ml I gave him 5ml. The animal poison hotline said it was still within overdose safe margins but he could get diarrhea and vomit. Well...

For a couple of days I also stopped fortiflora as the white powder was also being pooped and I had a tapeworm scare. I also stopped giving him rice; just chicken but again no improvement (apart from not pooping rice).

I went to the vet with him yesterday and they said he didn't have fever, the vet said to try white fish, rice again, prescribed diff probiotics, said if he doesn't improve in 5 days then we do poop test.

I can't include photos but does anyone has any clue? I'm not worried about the rice in poop being tapeworm as it looks like cooked rice 100%.

I'm unsure about worms as I keep checking and cleaning his butt and fur and nothing.

Otherwise my cat seems healthy-ish. Has more lethargic days than some other days but also gets zoomies, is VERY LOUD and demanding when hungry. Has appetite. He's running around especially after food. Playful. Cheeky too. I just worry about the constant different kinds of diarrhea?

So I think it's just very upset stomach - stress + diff foods in a space of a week + overdose of panacur. Maybe allergy?

But how do I help little guy?

Thank you so much!

Hiya!

I'm a mom for a 9 week old ragdoll as of 5 days ago. I brought him home Wednesday eve, Thursday morning we went to the vet for a kitten check up. Apparently he's a bit underweight but the vet didn't seem concerned as the litter was rather big (6 kittens) so the vet said now that he doesn't have to fight for food, he should gain weight. The vet touched his belly, told me he was about to have poos haha.

Now...my kitten has been having diarrhea on and off ever since I got him (only 2 solid stools) but last weekend he was very lethargic, didn't drink much, didn't eat much on Saturday. All very worrying as between Wednesday eve and Thursday eve he seemed to have settled very nicely. Playful, whiny, talkative, social.

I thought, and his breeder, it was stress due to new environment, I also had 3 guests on Thursday eve due to my big anniversary birthday. He played with the guests, slept next to one of them, didn't seem scared. The only thing he's scared of are bum washes lol. I also perhaps reintroduced wet food (Hills) to him too soon but he stopped wanting to eat dry food (Wellness Core). Then I tried a little bit of Iams dry and he ate that but the vomited a few cookies (just looked completely not digested, lots of bubbles). Then I switched to rice and chicken and he was loving these! Very hungry boy.

As he was having worse and worse diarrhea and I wasn't sure what to do so I went on google and I thought maybe he had worms. I wasn't sure if I saw anything in the stool and he had them soft, softer, muscus-like too. His breeder told me to deworm him as he only dewormed him at 4 weeks.

On Sunday I accidentally gave him Panacur 5ml instead of 0.5ml. Called emergency, they told me it was safe overdose. But since that, he regained energy. Had zoomies yesterday and all morning today. My vet this morning said not to give him any other dose and wait a month for a new treatment.

He obviously has diarrhea now, especially given the overdose, but I think I see white dots in his very soft and gluey orange-yellowy poo. I'm thinking he's got tapeworm. Also I think I see undigested rice (now this could be ofc tapeworm but given cats don't deal with rice well I am fairly certain it is rice). I'm not sure if I saw any worms in his poos - could be just part of muscus. I checked his fur, checked his bedding - didn't find any other signs.

I wanted to give my vet a sample of his poos but the vet said not a point, since I gave Panacur it would come back as negative (?). And they just told me to deworm him. But how do I know how to help him?

Now:

  1. Will Panacur be enough to kill tapeworms? Is he now pooing dots cause the medication is working?
  2. If not, can I give him anything else as he's still probably under overdose?
  3. How do I make sure he doesn't reinfect himself with tapeworm? I pick up the poo via paper towel and dish it into bin every time he poos. I am gonna wash all blankets, pillows and my bedding tomorrow and all clothes that I was holding him with and dry them in high temp. I tried to vacuum my carpet as well as I could. I bleached his litterbox and changed the litter yesterday after deworming.
  4. Am I in danger if he slept with me? Do I have to wash my hands if I just pet him? (Not before eating). Can I sit on my carpet? Can I sit on the sofa? I changed my bed sheets into fresh ones but idk when he's gonna be safe?
  5. How could he get tapeworm (if it is tapeworm but the lil seeds-like seem to be tapeworm)? He was brought up indoors, his mom doesn't go outside. He lived with another dog tbf? But he doesn't have fleas - his vet checked him. I keep checking him. I trust that the breeder wouldn't sell me the boy if he had fleas. He had really good reviews.
  6. If not tapeworm, what other worms look like little dot white seeds like tomato seeds but whiteish? In light brown-yellowy-orange soft stool? Or what else can cause this?
  7. Any advice to combat my anxiety? I'm anxious of both getting his worms and also of having an on-going non stop battle with his worms?

Thank you! Sorry, first time kitten moma.
