Ip to level 7 and 8 on some gear, and they don't appear to be changing any stats at all

What's the point of scan and go ?
I thought you could scan the items with your phone and pay with your phone and walk out. I'm reading that you still have to wait in line , kinda defeats the purpose. Do you actually have to go to the register, or am i wrong?
