Buy or leave it? Audi TT 8N Roadster 1.8T 190 HP Automatic 2005

Hi everyone,

I’m currently looking at an Audi TT 8N Roadster, 2005, 1.8T 190 HP with an automatic transmission, and I’d really appreciate some advice, especially from people who have experience with the Mk1 TT and its automatic gearbox.

Car details:

Audi TT 8N Roadster

2005

1.8T, 190 HP

Automatic / Tiptronic

Around 190,000 km (118,000 miles)

Fresh MOT/TÜV valid until 2028

Asking price: €4,500

Overall, the car looks very clean and well maintained. According to the seller, quite a few things have recently been done:

Engine oil change/service in April

Full interior detailing in July

Front right wheel speed sensor replaced in July

Summer tires have almost full tread

Timing belt and water pump have apparently been replaced at some point, but there are no invoices and the seller doesn't know exactly when they were done

As far as he knows, the automatic transmission has never had a proper service/oil change

The biggest question mark for me is the automatic transmission.

The seller openly told me that the car jerks slightly when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. I asked whether this only happens when the transmission is cold or also when warm. He said it happens both cold and warm, depending somewhat on how the car is driven.

He has owned the car since 2024 and says the transmission has behaved exactly the same ever since it hasn't gotten better or worse.

He personally doesn't consider the shifting behavior critical and said that if he were keeping the car, he would have the transmission serviced/flushed.

Interestingly, the seller is a qualified automotive mechatronics technician. He has also offered to let the car be inspected by DEKRA, since DEKRA will actually be at his workplace on Tuesday. He has no problem with me having the car independently inspected.

I definitely want to have the car inspected before buying it and will pay particular attention to the transmission during the test drive.

So my questions are:

  1. How concerning is this 1st-to-2nd gear jerk on these transmissions?

  2. Could old/contaminated transmission fluid realistically cause this and improve significantly after a proper transmission service/fluid change?

  3. Or does this sound more like a problem with the valve body/shift valves, torque converter or general transmission wear?

  4. Would you personally buy an 8N with 190,000 km and this known issue for €4,500?

  5. How would you assess the risk of this developing into a major/expensive transmission failure in the future?

I know this is a 21-year-old car with almost 190,000 km, so I fully understand that there will be some risks and maintenance costs. I'm not expecting a perfect car.

However, I don't want to pay €4,500 and then suddenly have to spend several thousand euros on the transmission shortly afterwards.

If I buy it, I would probably replace the timing belt and water pump immediately, since there is no proof of when they were last replaced. I would also have the transmission serviced.

My total budget is around €5,000, so a major transmission repair would be financially difficult for me.

The TT would also be my daily driver, not just a summer/weekend car, so I would be driving it year-round.

So, what do you guys think?

Would you consider this a reasonable risk at €4,500 after a good inspection and test drive, or would the transmission issue alone make you walk away?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Kaufen oder Finger weg?

Hallo zusammen,

I don't recognize myself anymore. Is this relationship destroying me, or am I really the problem?

I honestly don't know where to start anymore.

I love my boyfriend more than I've ever loved anyone. I would have done absolutely anything for him. But lately I feel like I'm slowly disappearing, and I don't even recognize the person I've become.

When we first got together, I believed I had finally found someone I could build a future with. I just wanted to love someone and be loved in return.

Instead, I feel like every single day I'm being reminded that I'm not enough.

He constantly criticizes me.

Not just occasionally—every day.

He criticizes my personality, my past, my mistakes, my life, my body, my eating habits, my fears, even my child.

One of the hardest things is my eating.

I've always struggled with eating when I'm stressed. Recently it became so bad that I would gag while eating and sometimes even vomit. I couldn't finish meals because my body simply wouldn't let me.

Instead of supporting me, he made me feel guilty every single time.

If I didn't finish my food, he would get angry.

He told me that next time he would simply leave the restaurant and never eat with me again.

He complained even when I took the leftovers home.

Because of that, I started feeling anxious every time we ate together. Ironically, I think the pressure he puts on me makes it even harder for me to eat.

I tried so hard to improve.

For ten days I managed to eat normally again. I finished every meal. I was so proud of myself.

Then one day I had one setback.

I ate fries and most of my sandwich, but suddenly I started gagging again and couldn't continue.

Instead of seeing the ten days of progress, he only saw the one failure.

He told me that I make promises I never keep.

He never sees the effort.

He only sees the mistakes.

The same thing happened at the beach.

I've always been afraid of deep water, but I wanted to overcome my fear.

I swam much farther out into the sea than ever before. I managed to stay afloat, even though I struggled with my breathing.

Instead of being proud of me for trying, he criticized how I was doing it.

Another day I accidentally lost his T-shirt while carrying all of our things after climbing up a steep rocky path. I immediately walked all the way back down by myself to search for it, but I couldn't find it.

Instead of appreciating that I tried so hard, he got angry, blamed me, changed my name on WhatsApp, and told me again that he didn't want me anymore.

This happens all the time.

One minute everything feels completely normal.

We're laughing together, talking, acting like a happy couple.

The next minute, completely out of nowhere, he says things like:

"I don't even want you."

"You're not the woman I want."

"I wish I had a woman like her."

Sometimes he looks at other women and openly says he wishes he had someone like them.

He constantly brings up my past and uses it against me.

He often reminds me that I have a child and makes me feel like that somehow makes me less valuable.

He has called me horrible names.

At one point he called me a whore, a slut, a cheater, disgusting, and said I was the worst thing that ever happened to him.

He even told me he wouldn't care if I died.

The worst fight happened during our vacation.

After months of hearing comments about other women, I completely broke down.

Out of anger, I said something I regret more than anything.

I said that maybe I would talk to another man someday.

I never meant it.

I would never actually do something like that.

I only wanted him to feel, for one second, what it feels like to constantly hear comments about other people.

I regretted it immediately.

I apologized.

I cried until I threw up.

But ever since then he keeps telling me that I'm a cheater, that I'm a terrible woman, and that everything is my fault.

Meanwhile, he continues saying hurtful things almost every day.

Sometimes I feel like this relationship has changed me into someone I don't even recognize.

I've said things I never thought I would say.

I've reacted in ways that don't feel like me.

That scares me.

I don't know if I'm becoming toxic, or if I'm simply reaching my breaking point after being hurt over and over again.

The hardest part is that I still love him.

I don't want to hate him.

I don't want revenge.

I don't want another relationship.

I just wanted to feel loved.

I wanted someone who would make me feel safe.

Instead, I constantly feel like I'm fighting to prove that I'm worthy of being loved.

Sometimes I ask myself three questions that I can never answer.

If he truly doesn't want me...

Why did he choose me in the first place?

Why did he let us fall in love?

And why does he stay if he believes I'm everything he says I am?

Sometimes I wonder if he realizes how much he hurts me...

or if he actually enjoys watching me break.

I'm writing this because I genuinely don't know anymore.

Am I really the problem?

Or have I simply been trying so hard to save someone who is slowly destroying me?
