In love with my new (to me) Roadster!
2018 with 90K miles. Fully loaded American roadster.
Adding a full APR intake and doing stage 1 tune next week.
New to owning Audi, luckily got a buddy that’s a porsche mechanic so I’m in good hands.
Any tips?

Hi everyone,
I’m currently looking at an Audi TT 8N Roadster, 2005, 1.8T 190 HP with an automatic transmission, and I’d really appreciate some advice, especially from people who have experience with the Mk1 TT and its automatic gearbox.
Car details:
Audi TT 8N Roadster
2005
1.8T, 190 HP
Automatic / Tiptronic
Around 190,000 km (118,000 miles)
Fresh MOT/TÜV valid until 2028
Asking price: €4,500
Overall, the car looks very clean and well maintained. According to the seller, quite a few things have recently been done:
Engine oil change/service in April
Full interior detailing in July
Front right wheel speed sensor replaced in July
Summer tires have almost full tread
Timing belt and water pump have apparently been replaced at some point, but there are no invoices and the seller doesn't know exactly when they were done
As far as he knows, the automatic transmission has never had a proper service/oil change
The biggest question mark for me is the automatic transmission.
The seller openly told me that the car jerks slightly when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. I asked whether this only happens when the transmission is cold or also when warm. He said it happens both cold and warm, depending somewhat on how the car is driven.
He has owned the car since 2024 and says the transmission has behaved exactly the same ever since it hasn't gotten better or worse.
He personally doesn't consider the shifting behavior critical and said that if he were keeping the car, he would have the transmission serviced/flushed.
Interestingly, the seller is a qualified automotive mechatronics technician. He has also offered to let the car be inspected by DEKRA, since DEKRA will actually be at his workplace on Tuesday. He has no problem with me having the car independently inspected.
I definitely want to have the car inspected before buying it and will pay particular attention to the transmission during the test drive.
So my questions are:
How concerning is this 1st-to-2nd gear jerk on these transmissions?
Could old/contaminated transmission fluid realistically cause this and improve significantly after a proper transmission service/fluid change?
Or does this sound more like a problem with the valve body/shift valves, torque converter or general transmission wear?
Would you personally buy an 8N with 190,000 km and this known issue for €4,500?
How would you assess the risk of this developing into a major/expensive transmission failure in the future?
I know this is a 21-year-old car with almost 190,000 km, so I fully understand that there will be some risks and maintenance costs. I'm not expecting a perfect car.
However, I don't want to pay €4,500 and then suddenly have to spend several thousand euros on the transmission shortly afterwards.
If I buy it, I would probably replace the timing belt and water pump immediately, since there is no proof of when they were last replaced. I would also have the transmission serviced.
My total budget is around €5,000, so a major transmission repair would be financially difficult for me.
The TT would also be my daily driver, not just a summer/weekend car, so I would be driving it year-round.
So, what do you guys think?
Would you consider this a reasonable risk at €4,500 after a good inspection and test drive, or would the transmission issue alone make you walk away?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
Was on the way to work and my car had other plans. Looking to grab a new engine and have it up and running soon.
Buenas , tengo una duda, de donde sacáis los repuestos para los Audi TT mk1. Tengo uno del 98 y es súper difícil encontrar repuestos de cubre carter e interiores.
Gracias y pasen buen día ☺️
Hello,
I have an Audi TT MK2 TDI with a Bose sound system.
I’m fairly certain that due to water ingress the amplifier in the boot has died (only one speaker now works).
I’d like to get this working again but I’d also like to install a JL Audio 10” Subwoofer.
Are there any guides on how to do this?
Anyone have a recommended downpipe they installed on their MK1 TT 225?
The flex pipe broke on my OEM pipe and it's been a struggle to find anyone to weld it or an aftermarket one for less than $800.
I'm leaning towards Malian based on the price, but I don't want installation to be a nightmare.
A black auto 350z came up for sale near me so I went to have a look. 350z has been one of my dream cars forever, especially in black. I know.. auto.. but they’re half the price vs manuals, and this one was perfect spec (performance grand tourer, black, coupe)
I left the dealership a bit confused thinking about the pros and cons over my remapped 1.8T 225hp coupe.
TT:
- Better fuel economy being a 4cyl 1.8T
- Rear seats that, although unusable 99% of the time, can come in handy for a very short trip.
- Much bigger trunk. Cavernous if rear seats are folded.
- Quattro + all-weather tires = all year drivability.
- Performance: both quite similar tbh. Maybe the TT a bit faster. The 350z felt strong and linear but the remapped 1.8T has the mid-range turbo shove.
- 1.8T is very reliable once the classic faults have been fixed (vacuum, coil packs, timing belt, etc)
- 1.8T can be built to big power.
350z:
- slightly newer than my TT being a 2006
- easier to daily drive due to auto transmission
- a few more comfort features: cruise control, electric seats, Bose sound system, auto dimming rear view mirror, TPMS, audio controls on steering wheel.
- great sound and NA linear power surge
- absolutely stunning looks. So muscular and timeless in black.
- VQ35DE has proven to be very reliable
Then I got home and thought what coupe would I replace the TT with.. and there are not many that cover those basis as good as the TT does.
Car: 2006 Audi TT Mk2 (8J)
Body: 2-door coupé
Engine: 2.0 TFSI petrol
Engine code: BWA
Engine family: EA113
Mileage: ~110,000 miles
Drivetrain: Front-wheel drive
Transmission: 6-speed Manual
Situation: Engine misfires on cylinders 1 & 4, only at idle. Misfire occurs more on cylinder 1, roughly 10:1 ratio to cylinder 4 according to my VCDS live data. If I raise the revs to about 2k then the count stops rising and returns to 0. Engine light used to come and go at the beginning but it's always present now. The rpm is stable at idle, the needle doesn't fluctuate. Car hesitates to start in the winter but it's fine during the summer. I could feel the misfire while sitting in the car a lot more during the winter but it's a lot better now. Car drives fine otherwise with no loss of power. I have been ignoring the problem for a bit as it wasn't really bothering me but now the engine light will fail the MOT so I'm looking to get it sorted. Any help would be appreciated.
Fault codes: P0300, P0301, P0304
Work done so far by myself:
• Replaced PCV valve + hoses
• Replaced PCV valve gasket
• Compression test showed consistent pressure
• Swap tested and replaced spark plugs - misfire doesn't move
• Swap tested ignition coils - misfire doesn't move
• Swap tested fuel injectors - misfire doesn't move
• Replaced injector O-rings and Teflon seals
• Performed manual carbon cleaning
• Replaced intake manifold gasket
• Replaced purge/N80 valve
• Smoke test shows no leaks
P.s. This is the first ever car I have owned and worked on with no prior knowledge, just 100s of hours of watching videos on youtube, reading through different forums and AI lol
J'ai frotté la porte de l'Audi de mon père hier, porte passager. Que conseillez-vous pour réparer les dégâts sans payer trop cher ? La couleur est spécifique il me semble.
J'attends vos réponses, merci.
Hey everyone, I finished replacing the timing chain on my MK1 225 BEA motor. You can see the marks and the 16 chain links between them. I was able to clear that code and went to start the motor but now I’m getting a new code P034100 which I believe means timing belt is out. When I did the timing chain, I slipped the timing belt off of the exhaust side to help with timing chain install. I must have put it back on a tooth off. What’s the easiest way to move this one tooth?
what’s up guys, i really don’t know much about cars but i got this warning on my MK1 225, am i cooked? My oil levels are good and i had an oil change about 2500KM ago. how do i go about fixing it? No check engine light either.
EDIT : i think it might be my sensor or wiring, because my dumbass has had this warning for at least 1500KM without knowing what it meant so i’m praying that means it’s not actually low engine oil pressure 😭😬 additionally, the warning didn’t present itself to me, i had to cycle through on my cluster to see it.
Anyone got any suggestions on how to remove this corrosion / pitting from the shift knob or am I looking at a replacement?
Cheers
Got passed down an Audi TT Mk2 from my mother. Not perfect but still pretty clean. Added a goose to make it more "me" 😄
Hi all,
Got my 2015 TT a few months ago and I need to get new tyres. Went to get a quote today (based in Aus) for Pirelli similar to what’s currently on the car came in around $3k cheaper tyres were around $2k. Tyre guy said it’s coz they’re 20r. I swap the wheels to
19’s with new tyres for around $2700 and then tyre changes going forward get way cheaper.
My question is do you think the difference between 20’s and 19’s is really obvious visually and would changing ruin the look of the car?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks everyone! Really appreciate the advice. 19’s it is
Hi, hoping someone can help. I replaced my Audi TT 2012 radio with a XTRONS android head unit and after installing it the audio keeps cutting in and out. Has anyone experienced this or know how to fix it please? Thanks
Hey all! I’ve been drooling over mk1 TTs recently and I currently have an NA Miata. I’ve been wanting something that feels more sophisticated and quicker, and the look of these is just amazing. I’ve been doing a ton of research and I’m getting so many conflicting answers. I do my own car work for the most part. Are these reliable/easy to work on? I really want one but I don’t want to destroy my wallet and get rid of an otherwise reliable vehicle (my na). I thought I’d go ahead and ask those that actually own them what their experience has been.
Thanks!
(Pics for attention)
what do you think of the combination of grill, rims and colour?
I just love that Audi Rims in combination with the black colour and a silver grill.
Hey Guys I've just joined the TT Club, the car stood still for quite a while with a Major Service only 3000km before. I bought the car yesterday and the 6hrs Drive home was perfectly Fine besonders rattling on the softtop on the left Side.
Now today the Check Engine light is on and as im not a Mechanic I would love some Input on how the Motor Sounds. I will bring the car to a Mechanic on monday but any answers would Smoothe my Heart Right now as I fear that I bought a Shitter.
Thank Y'all in advance.
