Remember: Set Up Backups or an Account for Cloud Sync

Hey Finch users! I just wanted to post a reminder to anybody who hasn't already to either set up backups that get saved off of your device or to at least create an account and set yourself up with cloud syncs/backups (and use it as an opportunity to vent a little bit).

With everything going on in the world, I decided I was going to try out GrapheneOS on my phone last night. Awesome! I set everything up, looked through my apps and documents to see what I needed to offload, and then prepped the Pixel for flashing. After some trial and tribulation I was able to get the OS installed and... Wait, I forgot to backup Finch. Oh no. Panic set in hard for me and I downloaded and opened the app and... Nothing. I scrounged my cloud drives, I tried logging in with every email, nothing.

I emailed support last night and recently received feedback confirming what I knew in my heart, but hoped wasn't true. My Finch was gone. To the team's credit, they offered to give me a healthy amount of items of my choosing as well as rainbow stones if I decided to make a new bird. Obviously they can't recreate my whole bird, who I've had for I think 4 or 5 years now from scratch, but the travel history and all the personality quirks, likes/dislikes, and shared experiences are what made him him. It's a lot of history to lose. As such, I've opted to not create a new Finch and stop using the app. The idea of starting over feels absolutely insurmountable to me at the moment.

None of this is an indictment on the Finch team, they've been wonderful and the product is awesome, but I just wanted to post a reminder to all to make sure you set one of the two methods up to ensure this happens as little as possible. If you're like me and assign life to inanimate objects/fictional characters, you don't realize how much it will affect you until it does.

The cloud sync seems like a great tool, I wish it had existed when I first made my Finch (I didn't even know it existed until yesterday). If you haven't already, be sure you've made an account. I've been a Finch Premium subscriber for a while so I assumed I just... Had an account, but you have to manually do so (for privacy reasons, which makes sense).

The great irony to this is that GrapheneOS was too restrictive for a bunch of simpler services and I wound up reflashing PixelOS this morning, so I went through all this head & heartache for nothing.

5 Years Later - Pulled the Lever on Floor Slots

Hey all, my wife and I had purchased what we believe to be a 1920 Chicago style Bungalow back at the end of 2020. We had an awkward move in with an apartment fire in our old place (a different unit that displaced us) while we were waiting to close on this home. As such, we lived in a hotel for a month before moving in here in a rush. As such, we didn't have the time window we had initially planned on to do painting, flooring checks, etc, and do the work before we brought the furniture in.

We've been chipping away at working on the house, trying to hit a balance between contemporary and historic (more to the latter as we've learned more about the home), and we finally put together the money to have a team come in and rip out our carpets, check the floor/do any repairs, and refinish it.

The floor was in excellent condition, having never been refinished, and has probably been hidden away under carpets for decades and decades (my guess is the 60's/70's based on the colors of carpet fibers that have turned up). But there was certainly still enough damage that it needed to be sanded down.

We opted for "Antique Brown" on the floors (it was the closest match to General Finishes Providence we could get which is what we had used when I refinished our stairs) and we're absolutely thrilled with how it came out.

The team did stumble upon a few interesting items after pulling up the carpet, namely some holes covered with plywood from where the old heating vents and intake must have been prior to HVAC being installed. They repaired and replaced those holes with red oak slats (the same wood as the floor) and frankly you'd never know there was damage.

Good afternoon all, I've been daily driving Nobara for a few months now, and overall it's been pretty great. Happy to have made the switch. However, there's obviously been a bit of a learning curve as many of the threads here indicate and is often the case with moving to Linux. I've got a solid handle on most of Linux's core features (I think) at this point, though I'm still memorizing my Konsole commands.

That said, I've been having Plasmashell issues as well as memory leak issues and I can't seem to figure out how to resolve them. Not 100% sure they're related but I imagine they are.

For full context, when I boot my PC (1st screenshot) you'll notice I generally boot into 6 GiB use after opening most of my core apps. I noticed that each time my computer hibernates/sleeps, the memory seems to be noticeably increased. The second screenshot is an extreme example I've just experienced (normally it only jumps ~2 GiBs per idle sleep) where it basically capped out and the kernel force closed Steam to make room. While operating my PC, I've also noticed that Plasma sometimes likes to get finnicky. Sometimes the "Start Menu" equivalent will no longer respond. Alt+Space still works and I can use Plasmashell --replace to get things back in order usually, but based on this, I feel as though something is happening with Plasma innately, which is being exacerbated by sleeping. I shut my computer off every night and when this issue presents itself, I usually do a fresh reboot to get myself back in order, but it's fairly tedious to have this leak occurring over the course of the day.

That said, what's the generally recommended process for looking for the leak/troubleshooting the problem I'm experiencing? System Monitor doesn't show any high RAM usage programs either in Overview or Processes and even if essentially everything is closed out, the RAM remains high.

I'm having a hard time sniffing it out and I'd prefer to not need to install Nobara since I had to fight with it for days to get it to play nicely with my audio interface (and frankly I still don't know how I fixed it).

Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you!
