21-year-olds considering moving to East London on £60k combined

Hi everyone,

I’m thinking about moving to East London with my partner and would like some honest opinions on whether we’re being realistic or completely delusional.

We’re both 21 and currently live in Wales. Our combined take-home income would be around £60,000 a year after tax.

We’re looking at Tower Hamlets, particularly:

Shadwell
Stepney
Limehouse

We’d be looking for a 1-bedroom flat. We both work from home and work for marketing companies, so we don’t need to commute every day.

We already spend a lot of time in East London and come to London around 10 times a year because, honestly, we find there’s very little to do where we currently live. We really like East London and are considering moving rather than continuing to travel down so often.

We have around £40,000 in combined savings and would like to think we’re fairly good with money. We’d be happy spending around 55% of our combined take-home income on rent if it meant living somewhere we actually enjoy.

I’ve never rented before, so I’m not really sure how realistic this is from a landlord/letting-agent point of view, especially as we’re both only 21.

Does this sound realistic, or are we making a bad financial decision?

Would also be interested in hearing from anyone who lives in Shadwell, Stepney or Limehouse about what it’s actually like day-to-day.

I’ve been on a Zoom call all day, every day, for nearly 2 years

Hi guys,

I’ve been working at my current company for nearly 2 years now, and I’m quitting next month.

It’s a small, fully remote company, and the reason I’m quitting is because of the working conditions.

I’m writing this as a warning:

Never accept a job under these conditions.

I work remotely, but I’m expected to be on a Zoom call from the start to the end of the working day, every day, 5 days a week. Literally all day.

I accepted the job without really knowing what it would be like because I had never worked from home before.

I’m on mute pretty much all day. It’s normally a 1-to-1 call between me and the director of the company. We have an intern who occasionally joins us, but for around 95% of the time I’ve worked here, it has just been me and the director on the call.

You can take breaks and mute your microphone, but the director, who is always on the call, never mutes his microphone. This means I can hear absolutely everything going on around him throughout the entire day.

From a productivity perspective, this is awful. I can hardly get anything done, as you can imagine. Having someone effectively sitting in a call with you for the entire working day makes it incredibly difficult to concentrate and work normally.

If any company tries to hire you on these terms, RUN.

I can’t wait to quit. 🥳

Athens, Rome or Naples: which is best for a solo trip?

Hello, I (20M) am from near Manchester. I have just quit my job and want to travel somewhere solo for 7–10 days in mid to late October.

I’m deciding between Athens, Rome or Naples and would like some help choosing.

I speak fluent English and a little French.

My criteria:

.I’m looking for a mix of city, nature and nightlife.

.I want somewhere with plenty of culture, art and history. (I’m aware that all three of these cities offer all of that, but these are the things I prioritise.)

.For nightlife, I’m not looking for Zante, Benidorm or Ibiza. More like Barcelona, Berlin or Amsterdam.

.I’d also like to be close to somewhere I could either snorkel or climb mountains.

.I’ll be travelling solo, so I’d like somewhere that is enjoyable and easy to explore alone.

.I’d also like to be able to bike around the city at night.

I have just travelled around Europe for the last month and got back this week. I went to Paris, Strasbourg, Marseille, Nice, Genoa, Turin, Milan and Bergamo, and I loved all of them.

Athens, Rome or Naples? Which would you recommend?

Germany recommendations

Hi,

I have the interrail global pass and am staying in Strasbourg for an extra day now.

Where in Germany would you recommend is good for a day trip.

The only place I have been in that region is Offenburg - which is lovely btw.

I am literally open to anything aslong as it is not more than 3 hours 1 way.

How far does the Sealand stink reach?

Can someone please help map the Sealand stink and show how far into Chester it actually reaches?

Also, are they doing anything to tackle the smell, or is it something residents just have to put up with?

Looking for a third destination to pair with Marseille and Genoa

Hi everyone,

My girlfriend and I (both 20) are planning a two week trip around mainland Europe in late August this year and would love some recommendations.

Our current plan is:

• Fly from Manchester to an undecided destination
• Stay there for 5 days
• Train to Marseille and stay for 5 days
• Train to Genoa and stay for 5 days
• Fly home from Genoa

We have already decided on Marseille and Genoa, but we are struggling to decide where to spend the first 5 days.

We are looking for somewhere that feels completely different from Marseille and Genoa. Ideally, we would like the third destination to have a German vibe.

We are not necessarily looking for Germany itself, as we realise it may be too far from Marseille. We are more interested in somewhere with German style architecture, historic buildings, interesting history and a different overall atmosphere from the Mediterranean cities we are visiting.

We are also looking for somewhere with plenty to see and do for 5 days, as well as good day trip options.

Our budget is not a factor and we are open to suggestions.

The first destination needs to be somewhere we can fly to from Manchester. It does not need to have a direct flight from Manchester, as long as it is not too far from an airport. From there, we need to be able to travel to Marseille by train in under 10 hours.

If you had 5 days to add before Marseille and Genoa, where would you choose and why?

Ideally, we are looking for somewhere with:

• A German vibe
• Beautiful architecture and historic areas
• Interesting history
• Great scenery such as mountains, lakes, hills or rivers
• Good day trips by train
• Plenty to see and do for 5 days
• A train journey to Marseille of under 10 hours

Thanks!

Is FC 26 really still £39.99 in the UK?

Hi, I want to get FC 26 mainly to play Career Mode on Xbox. I am not interested in Ultimate Team.

I used to play FIFA and want to get back into Career Mode, but with FC 26 being near the end of its cycle and FC 27 coming out soon, is it really still £39.99 in the UK?

Seems quite expensive this late into the game cycle. Is there anywhere I can get it cheaper?

Best two week Europe itinerary? Looking for destinations that feel completely different

Hi everyone,

My girlfriend and I (both 20) are planning a mainland Europe trip for late August this year and would love some recommendations.

We will be flying from Manchester, UK, to our first destination, then travelling by train to the next city (or cities). We would prefer not to fly between destinations.

We have around two weeks and are thinking either:

• 2 places for around 7 days each
• 3 places for around 5 days each

We want to visit some of the nicest places in mainland Europe, but we want each destination to feel completely different from the others.

The main European cities we have visited recently are Lisbon, Barcelona, Milan and Paris, so we would ideally like to try somewhere different this time.

Our budget is not really a factor, and we are open to almost anything. We are specifically not looking for a beach destination.

We are looking for places with interesting history, beautiful architecture, historic areas, and great scenery such as mountains, lakes, hills or rivers. Ideally, if one destination is known for one type of scenery, we would like the other destination to offer something different.

The most important thing for us is having good day trip options, ideally places where we can easily explore nearby towns, landmarks, nature spots or other interesting areas by train.

I have also added a colour coded map showing the area we are looking to travel within. The furthest north we would consider travelling is Denmark, the furthest east is Greece, the furthest south is also Greece, and the furthest west is Spain. We are open to suggestions anywhere within this area and would love to hear recommendations for places we may not have considered.

Some other ideas we have had are:

• Strasbourg and Palermo

• Lyon and Vienna

• Munich and Zagreb

These seem like very different experiences, but we are completely open to other suggestions.

If you had two weeks to plan the perfect trip, where would you go and why? Which two or three destinations work really well together by train while offering completely different experiences?

Thanks!

Central Europe city recommendations

Hi,

I’m looking to go away in late August or early September and would like to spend around two weeks travelling in Central Europe.

I’m considering either:

5 days in each of 3 cities (15 days total), or

7 days in each of 2 cities (14 days total)

My plan is to stay in one city and then travel by train to the next. I’d like the destinations to feel quite different from each other in terms of culture, atmosphere, architecture, scenery, etc.

At the moment I’m thinking about Lyon and Vienna, but I’m open to other suggestions.

Which cities would you recommend, and would you go for 2 cities or 3?

Thanks!

Does anybody know a theme that allows people to post listings for things for sale? Just to clarify, I don’t want people to buy through the site, just to advertise items.
