In Bangladesh Islamists are making effigies of Narendra Modi and Suvendu Adhikari and beating them with shoes. They are unable to accept Mamata's defeat. Meanwhile, Delhi keeps repeatedly instructing to maintain good relations with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
So the formula seems simple: illegally occupy a land in Kolkata, get a Calcutta High Court stay order, delay proceedings for years through advocates, and continue earning commercial profits from encroached property without facing immediate consequences.
Illegal construction is quite rampant in certain areas of Kolkata. One example is the Gulshan Colony on EM Bypass, which has increasingly encroached on natural wetlands over the years. Hopefully, this destructive trend can now be put to a stop!
Old habits die hard. TMC's illegal Toll & Cut Money Culture is now being abolished. Chief Secretary has issued order clearly stating against any collection yet at the Ishwar Gupta Setu (Kalyani), same was continued. Immediately people approached to stop it.
In 2011, after his government’s defeat, veteran CPI(M) leader Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee walked out of Writers Building in a simple dhoti and kurta, head bowed, he showed his class. After losing, he quietly left without looking back.
But today, after losing to the BJP, the behavior that TMC leader Mamata Banerjee is displaying reflects her own sense of class. Shame on her.
A tale of two very different political exits.
East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW), one of India’s most important Ramsar sites since 2002, is being systematically destroyed. What was once a vast natural sewage treatment system, flood buffer, and lifeline for Kolkata is now rapidly turning into concrete.
Over 505 illegal structures— including warehouses, godowns, sheds, and residential buildings — have come up by illegally filling water bodies (bheris).
In several pockets like Gulshan Colony (Kasba area), locals allege that a large number of structures have been built by infiltrators from across the border. Satellite images from 2011 to 2024 show how thriving wetlands have been converted into dense settlements where reportedly not a single house is legal and Bengali is barely spoken. This raises serious questions about demographic change, vote-bank politics, and complete disregard for environmental laws.
