Plath’s Smokehouse in Petoskey (and Roger’s City) is always a good choice.

My Mise En Place for breakfast. If you’ve never been to Plath’s, give them a go. Plus on weekdays from 11am, they offer hot dogs and brats with a number of toppings. Their coney sauce is pretty darn good too. It provides a quick and affordable lunch in a busy and costly area…..not that I’m unfamiliar with a nice lunch overlooking the water at Palette Bistro.

The smoked pork chops are good, as are their many other offerings. Many area restaurants feature their products. Sam’s Graces Cafe on Mitchell in Petoskey does a good job with their bacon, just to name one of many.

I am not affiliated. I’m just making breakfast in the woods using their products. I live 262 miles away according to Siri.
Have a safe holiday.

Morel Math. 1+2=3.

Mid Michigan here. First post. Longtime morel fan.

Also, if anyone can tell me why I’m having difficulty loading a short video, that would be nice. I encountered a snake digesting its meal a few feet from a morel I was picking. Wanted to share.

[Homemade] Tacos Carnitas, Salsa, And Tortillas.

Carnitas were made, then crisped in a pan with fresh rendered pork lard and the typical seasonings. Please forgive the cilantro ratio. I was understandably not in the mood to make a proper chiffonade…..

[I Ate] Morel Mushrooms.

They did not last long enough for anyone to snap a pic, but I’m sure you all understand.

Come on now…..

As have many of us, I stand alone in the woods and see things that are hard to communicate to those not present or interested.

[I Ate] Some Really Good, And Some Really Bad Dumplings In Chicago.

Sadly the lead pic was the worst. They came from Duck Duck Goat. The rest came from Chinatown and were wonderful. The middle pic is either from Hing Kee or MCCB….I do apologize for not remembering. The last pic is from QXY.

We’ve all got our things, and for me, one of them is that feeling I get as I depart the urban setting before sunrise and make it to say….(at least for those of us that take 127) that stretch of St. John’s where I am forced to slow down….set the cruise at 72….and for those 21 miles before the speed limit picks back up, I let daily life wash away as the sun crosses the eastern horizon.
A little while later comes that hill just before Clare where it all opens up and i know I’ve broken free. The entire frontier of Michigan lays before me…..and that, my fellow inhabitants, is one of the best ways I cope with the trappings of daily life.
While this holds true in any season, be it the brutality of the depths of winter, the busy summer months starring road “repair”, or the bittersweet splendor of fall, but standing in a familiar woods during springtime, after shedding the patina of grinding away for 48 weeks a year to get there, this to me reigns supreme.

Enjoy.
