Why is mental health still difficult to openly discuss in Morocco

I feel like in Morocco, mental health is either ignored, joked about, or treated as something shameful. A lot of people grow up hearing things like “you’re overthinking,” “just pray,” or “others have it worse,” instead of actually being listened to.

There’s also this pressure to always appear strong, especially around family and المجتمع. People care a lot about image and reputation, so opening up about anxiety, depression, burnout, or even loneliness can feel risky. Some people are afraid they’ll be judged, called weak, dramatic, or even “crazy.”

At the same time, life for many young Moroccans is stressful: studies, unemployment, family expectations, social pressure, uncertainty about the future, etc. Yet conversations about mental health still feel taboo compared to physical health.
