Adolf Hitler (1889–1945) was the leader of Nazi Germany and one of the most consequential and destructive figures in modern history. Born in Austria, he rose to power in Germany after World War I by exploiting economic hardship, political instability, and widespread resentment over Germany’s defeat. As head of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (Nazi Party), he became chancellor in 1933 and quickly transformed Germany into a totalitarian dictatorship. His ideology was built on extreme nationalism, racism, antisemitism, and the belief in Aryan racial superiority, which he promoted through propaganda, censorship, and violent repression of opponents.

Hitler’s rule led directly to World War II and the Holocaust. Under his leadership, Nazi Germany pursued aggressive territorial expansion across Europe, resulting in a global conflict that caused tens of millions of deaths. Most infamously, Hitler orchestrated the systematic genocide of six million Jews, along with millions of other victims including Roma people, disabled individuals, political dissidents, and others deemed “undesirable” by the Nazi regime. As Germany faced defeat, Hitler retreated into isolation and paranoia, ultimately dying by suicide in 1945. His legacy is defined by mass violence, human suffering, and the enduring warning of how extremist ideology and unchecked power can devastate societies.
