Sleep training?

I have a nocturnal sammie who refuses to let us sleep at night. We’ve had our baby for 2.5 weeks now. He’s 13 weeks old. He’s the sweetest and silliest boy and our family is absolutely in love with him. We were very ready mentally to bring home a sammie puppy, and honestly we’ve adjusted to the crate training, potty training, grooming training, puppy training and everything really well. One thing we weren’t expecting was his inability to sleep through the night.

He has been waking us up every hour and a half to play, 4-6 times throughout the night. We take him outside but he only uses the bathroom once out of these 4-6 times. And that’s what I was expecting at this age, 1-2 night time potty breaks, not 4-6. We’ve tried the crate at night and he will bark the entire time with no stopping, even if I’m laying on the floor next to him with my hand in the crate. He will lay in his crate and sleep during the day, but not at night. We’ve let him sleep on the bed with us and he’ll wake up and pounce on our heads and bark in our ears or gnaw on our hands if we try to ignore him. We’ve let him sleep on the floor and he will scratch at our bed and bark every hour and a half.

We have a puppy trainer and even he is at a loss because he says I’m already doing everything he can think of. I am a sahm and our puppy is only alone when we’re crate training and intentionally spending time away from him to help prevent separation anxiety. Other than that, he’s very active with me, we either run errands, train, socialize with people and other dogs, he’s stimulated mentally and physically during the day and he gets a solid 20 minutes of physical and mental stimulation before bed. He naps during the day but not to the point where he should be awake every other hour in the night. He also has every kind of teething or chew toy accessible if he’s bored, and he’s not destructive, he literally just wants us to wake up and play with him.

Does anyone else have a nocturnal sammie? Are there tips to help him adjust to sleeping at night? Or is this just a waiting game until he matures more?

Sleep training help?

We have a 13 week old Samoyed, we’ve had him for 2.5 weeks now. He’s a great pup, and he has been doing well with all his other training, day time crate training, potty training, and general commands like “off” when he gets too nippy.

My biggest struggle is that I have no idea what to do with him at night. Since day 1 he has not slept well at night. We tried using the crate with a blanket over but he will cry and bark the entire night without a break, even if I am laying on the floor next to him, and my hand in the crate with him. We tried letting him sleep on the bed with us, and he will sleep for an hour, but wake us up by pouncing on our heads wanting to play throughout the night, and barking in our ear if we try to ignore him. So we let him sleep on the floor and same thing, he will sleep for an hour or two, then start barking. He’s waking us up at least 4-6 times a night and goes to the bathroom once during those. I’m not sure what to do. We’re handling all his other puppy-isms pretty well but I really wasn’t prepared to be up 6 times a night at 13 weeks. I’m not sure what to do, we’re debating on putting him in another room entirely while we sleep, then getting him that one time when he usually needs to go.

He is properly stimulated before bed. He gets at least 20 minutes of physical and mental play before we settle down for the night.

Any advice from those who have also had nocturnal pups??

Refurbishing an old Kiln?

EDIT: added picture in comments! Please help!

Hi! I’m pretty new to pottery. I’ve taken multiple classes in my life, but because I live in rural countryside and there isn’t a studio nearby at all, I’ve been inconsistent. It’s a very inconvenient drive which is why I stopped doing classes even though I loved it. Recently we said whatever, let’s play with clay at home! So that’s what we’re doing, working with our hands and getting comfortable with tools and hand building, drying it out, breaking it down, repeat. I wasn’t considering setting up a proper studio or getting a wheel / kiln anytime soon because we were having fun with what we have and wanted to be more confident before the investment. Our plan was once we made pieces we absolutely loved we were going to make the drive to the city and use a studios kiln. However… I just had a neighbor reach out saying she found an old kiln in her mom’s barn… and it’s mine if I’d like it! (She said it was still functioning when her mom passed which I believe was roughly 5 years ago) but it’s been sitting uncovered in the barn gathering dust.

I’m going to check it out tomorrow, I do not know the brand or anything yet, I can update with pics and details when I do, but before I even consider dragging it home… is it hard to refurbish a kiln? It feels too good to be true so I’m trying to prepare myself for a big headache, but the idea of getting a kiln and firing pieces without needing to drive over an hour to a proper studio is very very exciting.

What to do if my yard has snakes?

I’m bringing home a pup soon, but just discovered our yard has a (harmless) snake / snakes? Even though it’s harmless, I’m worried a pups curiosity and instincts might get the better of him. Any suggestions on how to handle that? Should I keep him on a leash for potty breaks until he’s trained to obey commands? Or do you think he will be fine to roam on his own?

Can someone help me identify this snake? [Indiana]

I live in rural Indiana, however we are in a tightly populated residential area surrounded by concrete roads and houses… quite some distance away from the wooded areas. I don’t mind sharing our home with wildlife, so long as it’s not an endangerment to my young child and the puppy we’re about to bring home.

I know nothing about snakes. Does one snake mean we likely have more? And if this kind of snake poses a threat what are humane ways to remove them? Thank you!

Leaving for a week after getting a Samoyed puppy?

Edit: Thanks to your suggestions I realized we do have a relative who is retired and loves dog sitting. We will be asking them about their availability and asking the breeder about boarding!! Either way it looks like we will have options which is very nice.

I need help. We are getting a Samoyed puppy this year. I’m familiar with the breed, but I’ve never experienced a puppy, let alone a Samoyed one. We found a reputable breeder nearby and we have the option of bringing home a pup this summer or winter. However, we have a nonnegotiable overseas trip planned this fall where a puppy obviously cannot come with us. If we get the puppy this summer, they’d be home with us for two months before we leave for a week. (If it matters I’m a SAHM and I will be with this puppy nearly 24/7 up until this trip) And during those two months I will make sure they are familiar and comfortable in the house they would be staying in while we are gone (my mother’s house where my mom and sister have already agreed to help care for it during this trip, and both of them have puppy experience / dogs currently). But I am a bit anxious. I’ve never had a puppy before. Is leaving for a week too cruel at that age? Even if they’re familiar with the people, dogs and the home they’ll be staying? The puppy will be 19 weeks old by this trip.

Has anyone else done something similar with their Samoyed puppy? Am I over thinking it or should I simply wait until winter to get a puppy after this trip?
