Emerging Evil's Preview & Release Date

Daggerheart’s blockbuster release produced a rapid spike of interest in designing material for use with the game and drew the attention of a variety of creators looking to find a niche for themselves. The two of us found ourselves in a privileged position of having intimate knowledge of Daggerheart due to having worked as Additional Designers on the core rulebook and were able to quickly establish ourselves within the 3rd party Daggerheart-compatible design space. We’ve each shared our perspectives and experiences with the game and its design style, but wanted to find a more direct way to help creators that were approaching Daggerheart with eagerness and attention but could use more support to get started.

Earlier this year, Azu (of Bard & Raven) pitched a community event on Heart of Daggers, which had already established itself as the premiere retailer focused on 3rd party Daggerheart-compatible material. This idea would become Fear Fest, celebrating horror and dark fantasy creations across Heart of Daggers. Finding ourselves with fairly full production calendars already with our existing projects, we still wanted to contribute to the event, and, after some discussion with Azu and Matt (of Heart of Daggers), decided to launch a mentorship program with the intent of supporting emerging creators in the Daggerheart-compatible space.

We hosted a contest with defined prompts, asking participants to create an adversary based on one of three prompts, all with a horror-tinged theme in keeping with Fear Fest. The two of us each selected four submissions, choosing stat blocks that showed promise with regards to evocative design, ones that tied together fiction and mechanics. These designers showed thoughtful engagement with Daggerheart’s design grammar and its ethos of collaborative storytelling.

These eight winners received invitations to pitch, develop, and refine an adversary plus a paired environment for publication by the two of us in a book that would receive professional editorial, art, and production. From this process of feedback and playtesting were birthed 8 terrifying encounters that can fill anywhere from an hour, to a session, and even one that can provide a slow drip of subtle horror across many. All of them brought to life in vivid, full color by Per Janke and with some light guidance included from each designer to help easily incorporate these nightmares into your campaigns. We present the following Evil Encounters:

  • Waxing Horrific (Hewtallow Grove/Flickerflame Spirit) by Alexander Kingma
  • Buyer Beware (Ravenous Auction House/Boogey Man) by Fable Lane
  • Memories in D Minor (House of Memories/Haunted Pipe Organ) by Mia McDavid
  • Don’t Dwell (Dwell/Sostra Roia) by Jean Hare
  • All’s Faire… (Fortune’s Faire/Mesmerizing Medium) by Dion Haubro
  • Midnight Snacks (Feast of Fears/Nightmare Moth) by Gavin Greenough
  • Lend Me Your Ear (Earworms Domain/Earworm) by Mizan Alfrarishi Yudanto
  • Masks Off 2: Total Party Kill (Midnight Massacre/Mask of Massacre) by Tatiana Kopteva

On behalf of these designers, we hope you enjoy their creations and that you will keep an eye on them as they come into their own as designers working in the Daggerheart 3rd party space.

Emerging Evils Preview

Hello! Just dropping in to give a little preview of what's being cooked up under the guidance of Mike Underwood and I through the Pistolhaunt Menagerie of Mentorship we hosted as a part of Heart of Daggers upcoming Fear Fest.

Our collection is going to be titled Emerging Evils.

For those that don't know how it came about... From over a hundred stat block submissions we chose 8 mentees to shepherd through the design process as they created a Solo or Social adversary and a paired environment. Our mentees winning submissions can be seen here, but are not at all reflective of and have nothing to do with the final product.

Emerging Evils is a collection of 8 adversaries paired with an specialized environment to create thematically cohesive and mechanically synergistic encounters that can last anywhere from a half hour to an entire session depending on how deep you want to delve.

Pictured above are 2 of the 8 adversaries included in Emerging Evils (The Nightmare Moth and the Earworm respectively, with art by Per Janke). You may encounter a midnight massacre as a slasher descends on a sleepy town. Or find yourself locked in memory as a haunted pipe organ fills the your mind with specters of the past. Dare not lose yourself to regret in the Dwell as the mantis-like Sostra Roia preys on your mind. And definitely don't sleep on the Nightmare moth. Seriously. Don't. You might not wake up.

For what it's worth, in my mind this experiment in mentorship was a massive success. Not only did Mike and I see massive improvement between each draft, it created an immediate lateral network for all the mentees, who generously playtested and offered feedback to each other at every stage of the process. Some are already partnering with each other on other projects or have been hired onto projects like Fractus. I've even personally hired a couple of my mentees to do some work on the final volume of Pistolheart. But aside from the mentees themselves it got a whole bunch of new creators involved in the process and a lot of people are going to be getting their first published credit because they took a chance on themselves and submitted to the mentorship program.

There's going to be a lot of really cool, scary, spooky, and whimsical stuff coming out of Daggerheart 3rd party creators in the coming months so I hope people are ready for all of it. Fear Fest starts on October 17th, which is the planned drop date for Emerging Evils.

Pistolheart: Reaching the Rail's End

*Not an actual film.

Howdy Folks,

A lot of new people have gotten their hands on Pistolheart Volume 1 & 2 in the last few days so I wanted to make a post about what's left on the rails for Pistolheart as I draw nearer and nearer the end of this particular junction of my design journey.

But before all that I just wanted to give my sincerest gratitude for those of y'all that have been riding with me since the start. This project would not be a success (or even this far along) without the people who picked it up sight unseen. Each volume has been funded by the success of the previous and their success has enabled me to increase the scope and budget of each subsequent Volume.

What in tarnation is up with that poster?

Oh, that old thing? u/DNGNclub and I are working on a Tier 1 starter adventure for Pistolheart that highlights my favorite adversary in the entire 4 volumes: The City Slicker. It's an escort mission from hell where you'll have to do everything in your power to keep this soft handed son'of'a'rancher alive through his first cattle drive. This adventure is meant to provide a jumping off point for a Western campaign, whether its in the Drylands of elsewhere and will introduce a brand new Tier 1 colossus. We're aiming to release right around or during PAXU. And who knows? maybe if some of y'all show up in person you might could snatch up a physical copy.

What's going on with Volume 4?

With the Subclass Pack out in the wild, the lions share of my attention is going to finishing Volume 4, which is due out this winter. Art contracts are already out to some of the artists and playtesting is roughly halfway done.

What's gonna be inside it and will there be colossi?

Resounding yes. But there's also going to be 20 new adversaries and 4 Environments. Why so few compared to volume 3? Because the six colossi encompass 32 total stat blocks, which are immensely more complex to design (well).

As far as the adversaries go I wanted to depart from "guy with gun" as the primary archetype for the adversaries and just went hog wild. Not to let Darrington have all the fun with the Fowlbear, I'm gonna have an Urswine. Even the dusty west has Wizards with a fetish for splicing bears with... anything else. But if volume 3 leaned into groupings of adversaries, this is leaning away from it intentionally. I wanted to give a much wider swath of choices for critters that, while comfortable in a western setting, are also easily ported to other things.

Final Adversary List:

Tier 1

  • Balltailed Cat (Standard)
  • Deputized Townie (Minion)
  • Dust Scarab Swarm (Horde)
  • Titan Horny Toad (Skulk)

Tier 2

  • Boreworm Hatchling (Minion)
  • Gallows Treant (Bruiser)
  • Mercurial Tourist (Social)
  • War Dead (Standard)
  • Weeping Ghost (Enigma)

Tier 3

  • El Cuero (Solo)
  • Crossroads (Enigma)
  • Devil’s Gold (Bruiser)
  • Heart of Glass (Standard)
  • Needler (Ranged)
  • Urswine (Solo)

Tier 4

  • Saint of Irons (Solo)
    • Dominion of Iron (Phase Change)
  • Dragón Vaquero (Leader)
  • Sacred Herd (Horde)
  • Cosmic Hunter (solo)

Environments:

Tier 1

  • One Horse Town (Exploration)

Tier 2

  • Ghost Town (Exploration)
  • Burning Settlement (Event)
  • No Face Saloon (Social)

A number of environments had to be cut from development or placed on the back burner for another product as the updates in the CGL made the main event possible; the colossi. When you finally get to meet them, you might notice a few things that are different. I incorporate environment stat blocks into the colossi, whether it's an environment they create around them or that individual segments that operate more like environments. In one case, it's a series of 5 linked exploration environments as the PCs are forced to be eaten alive in order to kill it from the inside.

For a little taste of what's to come:

Puralu, the Mother of Tunnels

Tier 2 Colossus
A behemoth boreworm, covered in stone cutting scales, only awakens to lead a vast migration to richer earth. She leaves behind fertile soil and devastated settlements in her wake.

Sabeen, the Terror Engine

Tier 2 Colossus
A malignant titan’s spirit that has possessed the wreck of a train, spreading terror across the rails under the light of the moon.

Eemp, the Wake of Glass

Tier 3 Colossus
A solar charged roadrunner made of tempered glass, formed by the extreme heat created by its impossible speeds.

Auromel, The Mine Drinker

Tier 3 Colossus
A floating, golden dodecahedron. Its outer shell is seemingly impenetrable and each face sports a massive eye.

Ralmo, the Wandering Mesa

Tier 4 Colossus
A colossal tortoise with a mystery filled mesa atop its back. An unstoppable juggernaut that will only cease its rampage if its put to sleep for another millennia.

Maletrella, Inevitable End of all Stars

Tier 4 Colossus
An impossibly large, reality warping gravity well that has pulled the ground and sky around it into a four armed humanoid shape terminating in a trunk that digs deep into the world.

Now I'm not gonna say this should be your Kudamat, if you're running the Drylands. But it could fill in for a world ending boss for any campaign that needs one. The playtest I've witnessed of Maletrella was one of the most exciting and emotional sessions I've ever been a part of. And I was muted the entire time. If you click on to the second picture of the post you can see a little grey scale sketch preview of Maletrella that Carey Pietsch is cooking up for me. If you've grabbed all the class options, you'll notice some familiar faces (backs?) in that bubble. Michelle Pecoraro is back on adversary duty, which is really exciting.

Volume 4 is shaping up to be the biggest volume yet. Depending on how well Volume 3 and the Subclass pack perform in the coming months will determine how much guidance I can budget into editing after all the stat blocks have been pored over.\

Physical Edition When?

The plan is still to put together a crowd fund for a physical edition some time next year. However, Volume 4 will need to recoup its budget before I can grease the wheels on that whole process. In the collected volume I'm planning to include some extra player facing content (The Doctor class), some cut environments, and some new art.

So what's next?

The mentorship program that Mike Underwood and I ran is nearing its end, and our 8 mentees have designed some incredible encounters (Solos or Social paired with an environment) that could easily fill half to a full session of play. They really nailed the tone of these terrifying creatures and we're really excited for everyone to see what they've done when it releases in October. Per Janke, who did the environment art for Pistolheart, is working on the art for this now. Keep an eye out for that on Heart of Daggers during Fear Fest.

Other than that, there's some things cooking that I'm not ready to announce. But if you made it this far, everything is on track to close out the year with an absolute bang.

Happy Trails.

Pistolheart: Hope & Fear Subclass Pack is Live!

With the update to the CGL the Pistolheart: Hope and Fear Class pack is here! Rather than wait for Volume 4, which won't be out till late this year, I wanted to give people the chance to use the new Pistolheart character options I'd been developing over the last few months.

There's also guidance inside on how to take the stuff I made for Pistolheart and repurpose it for a Dark Heart of Andaluria campaign.

There's also a community spotlight on some creators who I think made some solid work that could fit into either a western or gothic horror campaign.

Then there's a little preview of one other thing that might pop up before we see Volume 4.

It's available on all digital stores, so take your pick.

Pistolheart Volume 3 Is Live!

Pistolheart Volume 3 is on Heart of Daggers and Itch!

In case you missed the Daggerheart Next Panel, one of the announcements was that the CGL was going to be updated to include the mechanics of the frames in core, along with Hope and Fear. So I'm pleased as hell to announce that Volume 4 will include 6 new colossi! And once the SRD updates to include Hope and Fear I'll be releasing a small subclass pack with subclasses for the Assassin, Brawler, Warlock and Witch. And keep an eye out for a Pistolheart related collaboration with a really exciting partner. More to come, but I hope for now you enjoy what I keep putting down because I'm still having fun designing it!

Pistolheart: Something Weirder This Way Comes (And a Sale!)

Howdy Folks,

In the lead up to Pistolheart Volume 3's release both Volume 1 & 2 are going on sale! So if you've been hesitant because of the price point there's no better time to get on board than now. Please enjoy this Cosmic Invader (A tier 4 adversary appearing in Volume 3) in the meantime. Aiming late July or Early August to for the rest of the cosmic invasion (as well as everything else).

We got a very healthy amount of submissions for Fear Fest, so Mike and I will have our hands full selecting our mentees but there's already a lot of really exciting work that people put out there.

Happy Trails!

Pistolheart Railmap: Volume 3 & (not so) Distant Frontiers

Howdy Folks,

I can’t express enough appreciation for all the support this project has received from the community. I wanted to post an update to the roadmap I made here so we all know where we’re heading as I Grommit these trains tracks in front of me as I go:

https://www.reddit.com/r/daggerheart/comments/1phnsae/pistolheart_full_steam_ahead/

Again, the beauty of this experiment in modular design is the ability to pivot and adjust content and production pipeline in between each volume. And for those who may have only discovered Pistolheart recently, the intent was always to produce the four volumes. Once complete, the plan is to crowdfund for a physical edition.

So where are we?
Volume 3 is nearly done of editing and I’m getting ready to lay out the stat blocks, barring a couple final rounds of testing of the Tier 4 adversaries.

The text for Volume 4 is about three quarters of the way complete. The environments and adversaries are in testing but I still need to round out the drop in locations and any additional goodies I plan to include.

So what’s changing?
Mostly the pipeline. While I don’t think the survey results are going to change the direction of the content planned, it certainly is changing up how I am producing the next two volumes already. I’ve learned a lot releasing these and I want to make sure those lessons are taken forward into subsequent volumes. And I kind of blew up my budget on Volume 2 when it came to art. No regrets. I love all the art.

  • Based on the survey results, more people wanted more stat blocks… even if it meant a little less art. So instead of 20 adversaries, there’s going to be 27. Not all of them will have art. But not even the core book has art for every adversary, so I’m hoping this won’t be a deterrent since it means more fun tools for the GM to use. When it's all collected, because of the surplus of art from 1, it'll end up feeling pretty balanced in the end.
  • The reason I am editing/laying out in advance instead of at the same time is so I can assess where I can put art for what and commission accordingly. This may seem obvious for a lot of people who produce independently, but I promise I am not as smart as I am dashing!

What’s Coming in Volume 3?
First of all… MORE adversaries. I leaned heavily into synergistic adversary groups, rounding out the Black Hats, Marshals, and then introducing the (cannibalistic) Hillfolk, (legally-distinct-grabioid) Boreworms, and the Cosmics (Yes, aliens).  There are still standalone adversaries like the chupacabra and spectral stampede but the majority of the unaffiliated adversaries will be coming in volume 4. While Daggerheart is a narrative first game, combat is certainly part of that narrative and creating tool kits for GMs to weave dynamic, exciting, and thematic combats is, to me, as fundamental to the story as anything else you do. Mechanically and thematically cohesive groups can really help elevate the feel and stakes of combat and story. But for those less inclined to violence, there’s more social adversaries this time around. The City Slicker might very well be the most evil creation across all three volumes. I’ve even built out a few new Enigma adversaries that affect the game entirely differently from the ones in Volume 2. Complete adversary list below:
Adversaries
Tier 1

  • Black Hat Rail Driver (Bruiser): A disenfranchised rail worker who uses their immense strength to bully those weaker than them.
  • Black Hat Trapper (Support): An impoverished hunter that’s turned their skills towards hunting people.
  • Desperate Gambler (Social): A gambler looking to strike it rich. Or at least break even.
  • City slicker (Social): An irritating burr you can’t seem to shake, who has no idea what they’re doing out in the frontier.

Tier 2

  • Black Hat Bruja (Support): A witch who joined a bandit crew after their forest home was destroyed by loggers. They use their healing prowess to bolster allies.
  • Black Hat Worm Wrangler (leader): A dustbowl farmer who turned their domesticated boreworms into terrifying tools of banditry.
  • Adult Boreworm (Bruiser): A wild boreworm the size of two train cars, covered in heavy armored plating with a fearsome, rock breaking beak.
  • Juvenile Boreworm (Skulk): A worm as thick as a cow and long as two cows, covered in armored plates. Farmers lucky enough to raise one from an egg can till even the rockiest soil.
  • Chupacabra (Solo): A nocturnal predator that feasts on the blood of livestock.
  • Maverick (Enigma): An information broker masquerading as a gambler. If you want something from them, you’ll need to beat them at their own game.
  • Sawbones (Social): A doctor doing their best with piss-poor resources and an even worse bedside manner.
  • Spectral Stampede (Horde): The vengeful spirits of a hunted herd manifested as a ghostly stampede.

Tier 3

  • Frontier Marshal Captain (Leader): Leaders among the Frontier Marshals whose prowess and command are unmatched.
  • Frontier Marshal Scout (Ranged): The rank and file of the Frontier Marshals are unmatched with their rifles.
  • Frontier Marshal Sandwalker (Support): Sand and lightning–wielding mages who lend their powers to the Frontier Marshal’s cause.
  • Frontier Marshal Steamguard (Bruiser): A hulking, steam-powered construct made of ironwood and banded metal, created for tactical cover and frontal assaults.
  • Hillfolk Frenzy (Standard): A cannibal driven to frenzied cannibalism by the lost songs of a dead god.
  • Hillfolk Flesh Ripper (Bruiser) : A hulking cannibal whose bloodlust is unquenchable.
  • Hillfolk Marrow Drinker (Support) : Using a combination of old magic and hallucinatory cave fungus, the marrow drinker drives other hillfolk into a frenzy.
  • Hand of the Plague (Enigma): A rogue warlock who wields outlawed plague magic and traffics in filthy vermin.
  • Hauntavermin (Minion): Nasty, unusually large vermin bursting with disease.
  • Sword Scorpion (Bruiser): An unnaturally large, venomous scorpion with an exoskeleton covered in jagged blades.

Tier 4

  • Cosmic Amalgam (Bruiser): A horrifying grafted experiment composed of parts from a hundred different worlds, mashed into a rolling ball of flesh.
  • Cosmic Captain (Leader): A gaseous being from across the stars, encased in an armored E.V.A. suit, surrounded by a shimmering dome of energy.
  • Cosmic Grafter (Support): A terrifying, snakelike surgeon, from across the stars. Obsessed with obtaining perfection, they can shape flesh and mind alike.
  • Cosmic Invader (Minion): Footsoldiers from another world with grey, slimy skin, large void-like eyes, that wield curious technology.
  • Cosmic Infiltrator (Enigma): A gelatinous, shapeshifting being from another world, capable of blending in perfectly with the locals.

As far as environments, I am including 11 across all four tiers that attempt to round out a lot of the Western experience. You get your shootout, your horse chases, your ability to live your Oregon Trail over hunting fantasy… and lots more. The full list below:

Environments
Tier 1

  • High Noon (Event): A quick-draw duel between two gunfighters.
  • Mounted Chase (Event): As the heroes flee on their mounts, their pursuers are not far behind!
  • Mounted Pursuit (Event): A group of mounted riders flees from the party. Saddle up and catch them!
  • Stranger’s Campfire (Social): Whether a solitary camp in the midst of the great plains or a cookfire in a settlement, the campfire is a place to share meals, swap stories, and hear the latest gossip.

Tier 2

  • Great Plains (Traversal): A vast rolling prairie, full of wildlife and very little cover.
  • Murder on the Casino Train (Social): A rolling gambling house where the festivities have been interrupted by a MURDER!
  • Stagecoach Ambush (Event) A short ride from safety, outlaws descend on the party as the heroes drive a stagecoach full of valuable cargo.
  • Trading Post (Exploration): A bustling trading post where supplies can be sold or bartered.

Tier 3

  • Gypsum Dunes (Exploration): Endless white dunes of gypsum, giving it the appearance of snowfields. Strange structures poke through the fine powder every so often.
  • Stranded in the Desert (Event): Bleached bones, scrub brush, and rocky desert as far as the eye can see. No water. No hope.

Tier 4

  • Cosmic Crash (Exploration): An otherworldly vessel, half buried in the rocks and sand. A gaping hole in its side invites ingress.

Beyond the stat blocks… what else is in Volume 3?

Guidance for the adversaries and environments. Several drop in locations and settlements with adventure seeds for each one. An armory stocked with some new western themed armor, five magic items, six magic saddles, three consumables, and rules for Domain Infusions -- powerful enchantments that only activate when you hold enough of one type of domain card in your loadout.

When should we expect Volume 3?
Some time late this summer seems to be the viable target point. I’d ideally like to release before H&F drops but that may be ambitious.

What’s coming in Volume 4?
Volume 4 is a little less set in stone. There’s more drop in locations planned. I felt, at this point, that the groups were filled out enough so I wanted to offer more general use/unaffiliated adversaries in this last volume.  Currently the list is sitting at 20 adversaries and 9 environments, because I wanted to leave myself some cushion post H&F release to assess what’s needed/wanted in the final volume. Lists below.

The last thing I’d like to include is narrative guidance on how to reverse engineer and utilize the adversaries and environments across each of the volumes in different campaign genres. Pistolheart has a ton of utility for GMs of all stripes, and I want to make it as easy as possible for as many people to use it as I can.

Adversaries (Subject to Change)
Tier 1

  • Balltailed Cat (Standard)
  • Deputized Townie (Minion)
  • Dust Scarab Swarm (Horde)
  • Titan Horny Toad (Skulk)

Tier 2

  • Boreworm Autarch (Solo)
  • Boreworm Hatchling (Minion)
  • Gallows Treant (Bruiser)
  • Mercurial Tourist (Social)
  • War Dead (Standard)
  • Weeping Ghost (Enigma)

Tier 3

  • Beast of Basilisk Lake (Solo)
  • Devil at the Crossroads (Social)
  • Heart of Glass (Standard)
  • Needler (Ranged)
  • Rusher’s Woe (Bruiser)

Tier 4

  • Saint of Irons (Solo)
    • Dominion of Iron (Phase Change)
  • Shepherd Dragon (Leader)
  • Anointed Herd (Horde)
  • Wandering Mesa (Enigma)

Environments (Subject to Change)
Tier 1

  • One Horse Town (Social)
  • No Face Saloon (Event)

Tier 2

  • Boreworm Migration (Event)
  • Riverboat Casino (Social)

Tier 3

  • Ghost Town (Exploration)
  • Burning Settlement (Event)

Tier 4

  • Back of the Wandering Mesa (Exploration)
  • Cosmic Valley (Traversal)

Anything else in the works?

Outside of the four volumes, I’m working on a short, tier 1 adventure that utilizes adversaries and environments from volumes 2 and 3 that will operate as a bit of a Quickstart adventure for Pistolheart. It won't be included in any of the subsequent volumes, but depending on timing maybe it'll fit in the physical volume.

It will contain everything a GM needs to run an introductory session of a Western campaign (whether its set in the Drylands or not). This is actually a relatively light lift since all those stat blocks and pieces of art exist already, and would be amortized into the adventure. I think folks who have been with it since Volume 1 may get a little less use out of it since they will have all these stat blocks already. The design intent behind it is to give a taste of what the larger collection has to offer for people that might be on the fence about the genre. No idea about when I can release it. Still in its early stages.

There was talk about a possible Pistolheart Jam. I’d love to see what folks can do with Enigmas. Depending on timing, I might be able to buy the winning design and highlight it in Volume 4. Still ironing out details.

As for the Colossi in the room… A lot of you have been asking if I’ll do Colossi or PH subclasses for the classes in Hope and Fear. I’m in the same boat as everyone else. I can’t make/sell stuff not covered by the community license. If things change, it’s certainly on my list!

If you're interested in other games, I'm working on the Acolyte class for Draw Steel. So keep your eyes peeled on that front!

That’s all for this novella. I did not expect Pistolheart to make such a big splash and resonate with as many people as it does. As always, I’ll do my best to answer any questions folks throw my way about the project and my process. If you read this far, thanks again for coming along on this ride.

Howdy folks,

Wanted to share some information from my recent Pistolheart Survey that I thought would be informing and encouraging to other creators (especially those staring down the barrel of an art budget and sweating).

The most unexpected thing for me was people preferring unaffiliated adversaries vs groups. Though I suppose in PH's case, unaffiliated enemies may be easier for GMs to reskin on the fly.

Just thought it would be helpful for others to have this info too. Feel free to discuss!

EDIT:
Since it doesn't display in these results 1 = Not Important and 5 = Very Important.
