Volanti Rocket Air First Impressions

As much hype as these have received over the last few weeks, I wanted to offer my thoughts and first impression. First off, the shoe is beautiful in hand. Size US 9.5, I have wide and flat feet and historically have gone up .5 in just about every brand out there. 361 Joker GTs and EQLZ 247 are the only shoes, recently, I've gone TTS. Fit is TTS, width is great with a 1 to 1 feel. I have just about a cm space from my big toe to the end of the shoe. Regular or narrow footers may be able to go down .5 Lockdown is above average. For as soft an upper as this shoe has, it's pretty supportive. Being such a minimalist shoe, usually the support and lockdown suffer. That is not the case here. My foot stayed planted in the footbed with no heel slippage. Full length carbon fiber plate that's bottom loaded definitely gives some energy return on that first step. The base is wide and the outrigger lateral side is pronounced. They also use that cat tongue material in the heel cup to lock your sock in. Cushion setup is the star here. The super critical foam is sooooo good. Bouncy and super plush. Maybe a little too plush for shifty players who are super explosive but amazing for most if not all other player types. The nitro air pod in the forefoot can be felt immediately when putting on the shoe. Also super bouncy and impact protection for a shoe this low to the ground with this much court feel is almost a unicorn. Court feel is comparable to Sabrina 3 or Kobe 5. Now for the disappointing part. Traction setup. It's elite on a clean well maintained court. Inline with GCU and RPU. They don't say it's a polyurethane based compound but I feel like it's leaning that way. When I took them to my public rec center home court, that's when things went down hill a bit. They pick up a ton of dust, unlike GCU and RPU. If you have the luxury of playing on clean polished courts, you'll not have any issues. My home court on the other hand, the micro texture held onto the dust and some dirt (pickleballers with no respect for the court or having court specific shoes). Wipes were okay but happened often after about 15 minutes. I really wanted them to perform better after playing on a clean court but they didn't. I didn't slip out or anything dangerous but the difference on a real life public gym floor was noticeable. I feel the same way about the Kai 3s. Keep them clean and they're great. Get lazy with wipes and it's not good. Perhaps the GCU and RPU shoes have spoiled me beyond objective opinion. When you never have to wipe and switch to a shoe that really requires it, it is annoying. What world am I living in? Overall for $150, I like the shoe a lot. Better than the Harden 10, Luka 5, GT Cut 4, Jordan 40, LeBron 23, KD 19.... The list could go on. Is it the Gamma killer some have talked about? Hard No. But is it 90% of the Gamma for 1/2 the price? Yes. I want to see how durability is moving forward but can't be any worse than some Kobes at this price point. GCU and RPU shoes will remain my go to shoes on my home court. When I play on better courts, I won't hesitate to throw this shoe in my bag. It's a great first effort in the basketball space for Volanti. As good or better than 90% of the big brands current offerings. Which says a lot about them and the current state of new hoop shoes in general.

In the bag today: Kobe 9 Elite Protro EM vs 361 Joker 1 GT

On sale these days, I feel like this is a pretty good comparison on court.

As much as I want to love Nike products as an old hooper, in this case I can't understand what Nike is doing charging $190 retail for this takedown of an "Elite" model. Joker 1 GT had a retail price early on of $170. What you're getting in the 361 as far as tech and performance is heads and shoulders above this Protro.

One of the only advantages I can honestly say is better in the Kobe is the court feel, sacrificing impact protection. The traction setup on the 9 has always been one of its strongest attributes. It is amazing on clean courts but does pick up some dust on my rec center court and requires occasional wipes. The Joker however is on another level. 0 dust pickup on any court. It's almost too good on clean courts. You stick almost tripping on your own feet. Much like Curry flow. The React drop in the Kobe uses is adequate but for the price, I feel like they could have used Zoom. Even a split Cushlon Zoom setup like the LeBron 23. The Joker again is superior. CQTExtreme foam is on WOW Boom foam level. Bouncy and super plush. You can feel the bounce unlike the React which is only there to provide adequate impact protection. I like the uppers in the Kobe though. It just feels good. Glove like. The Joker is very locked down but just a little less comfortable. Breathability goes to the Kobe but if you own a pair of the Joker GT SE, we know they solved that problem. I own those too but did not bring them. Lastly, stability goes to the Joker as well. A bit higher off the ground but with the carbon fiber quickbone shank and wider footprint you are super planted. So really, I'm disappointed with the Kobe 9. It's a good shoe, don't get me wrong, but for the price I won't buy another pair. I'd buy the Jokers again and again and I have.

Steph Curry Li Ning decision

For those who don't understand why he chose a Chinese brand. Here are 6 examples of why. If Nike and Adidas Flagship shoes are anywhere near the performance of these, I'd like to hear your examples. Kobe 4,5,6 have original release dates of 2008,2009 and 2010. If you don't know, these are WOW 12 Family Love, WOW All City 14 DLO, 361 Joker 2 GT Miro and Joker 1 GT SE NYC and second photo WOW 11 and WOW 10.. I have LeBron 23 Masked Menace. Would never hoop in them (too stiff, heavy and traction is 🗑️ on dust) and they come with a tag stating they are a lifestyle shoe. Jordan 40 🧱 with sub par performance for +$200. Not talking about the contract, just the performance of the shoes should be enough to justify his choice.

OG Hooper Rotation

361 Joker 2 GT Miro M9.5

361 Joker 1 GT SE NYC M9.5

Way of Wade All City 14 DLO M10

Way of Wade 11 M10

EQLZ 247 M9.5

I have wide and flat feet so these also fit my foot shape very well.

The 361 Jokers I went with size 9.5 TTS. The WOW shoes tend to run a little narrow so I went up .5

My preferences for getting into the rotation are traction setup, cushion and support/lockdown.

361 Joker GTs with RPU and CQTEXTREME are definitely my favorite combo. The Joker 1 GT SE are my favorite outdoor shoe.

WOW AC 14 and WOW 11 GCU and TuffRB traction, Boom and Super Boom cushion. AC 14 also cooks outdoors.

EQLZ 247 is just so good all around. It doesn't necessarily do any one thing great but does EVERYTHING really good. The shark scale traction is great on dust. The uppers are buttery soft. And fits MY foot the best. Forefoot is wide and long with a lot of room so I would recommend sizing down at least .5 for most foot types and a whole size for narrow feet.

I have WOW 12 Family Love on the way so I'm sure they will be making it into the bag as soon as they arrive.

What is missing?
