Firefox 152 FINALLY has a normal "homepage as tab" like every other browser, as a hidden setting at least
I updated my Firefox on Android today and got version 152.
There's now a way to have the homepage behave as a normal tab, like in every other browser. So for example, you can be on a website, tap on the address bar (to show the homepage with the pinned sites) then tap on a pinned site and it will open in the SAME tab rather than creating a new tab! So finally it behaves like every other mobile browser and Firefox on desktop and you won't amass tons of tabs that you don't need.
To enable this:
Go to Settings -> About Firefox -> tap on the logo 5 times to enable the debug menu
You'll now have a new section in Settings called "Secret Settings", tap on it and then [x] Enable Firefox Labs
You'll now have another new section in Settings called "Firefox Labs", tap on it and then [x] Homepage as a New Tab and restart the browser.
