Living where you don’t feel welcome

Hi All, I’m from the US and have lived abroad in various countries for over 20 years now. I have always had an awareness (which has grown more nuanced over time) of some amount of resentment towards the US government and its policies, and I am a fairly well-informed person that understands that resentment.

Also, I live in a part of the world where there has recently been armed conflict instigated by my own government. I’m horrified by the things that are going on and the ways in which the orange menace and his lackeys are doing so much damage and inflicting so much harm, and so of course I understand that this is going to trickle down into how people see me, even if they logically differentiate between my nationality and me as a person…

My question is, how have you learned to adapt to living in places where you don’t really feel welcome? I’m not only interested in the experiences of Americans here—I’d love to hear from anyone from anywhere who has struggled with this…

I’m going to be here for another several years, so I don’t see this attitude that I’ve picked up on changing in that time. I’m wanting your insights on how to balance wanting to be polite and friendly while acknowledging that other people from the English speaking world don’t really want to have much to do with me right now. And it’s not because I’m an obnoxious, loud person—I promise I’m not. But also, I can’t be other than what I am. Right now, I’m more enjoying the company of people who aren’t from the English-speaking world. And it’s all fine—it’s character building, these types of challenges, but it’s not always easy. Thanks in advance for sharing!

How do I change my attitude towards SIL?

Before I start: overall, I’m blessed with my in-laws. I love them and we live far from them so we don’t even have to interact that much. I’m really asking for others to share their experiences and what helped them reach a point of being less annoyed AF. If you have been done seriously wrong by your in-laws, I don’t meed to hear from you.

My husband has several siblings, and none of them are bad people. We all have respect for each other and live some distance away so I’m trying to gain perspective here…

My husband and I have been married almost ten years, together for 12, so these aren’t new relationships. I want to consider ways to keep things pleasant when we all gather a few times per year, so I would love to hear about how you managed to maintain decent relationships with in-laws you really didn’t like that much. There’s one in-law sibling I don’t see that I will ever like because I think she’s a bossy, entitled snob.

TLDR: What has helped you enjoy time with your in-laws more? How did you adjust your attitude in a way that made things more pleasant?

Quitting Zopiclone by taking Valdoxan/Agomelatine?

Hi All, Like so many in this group, I have struggled with insomnia all my life. For the past couple of years, I have been taking Zopiclone and it has been great. However, I don’t dream when I take Zopiclone and I think that’s a real shame—I believe that some dreams are powerful messages from the unconscious and that it isn’t good to be permanently out of touch with that…

My doctor has prescribed a medication called Valdoxan, which has an effect on the circadian rhythm (and is primarily used to treat depression and anxiety) to help me stop the Zopiclone. I have been able to step down from 1.5 Zopiclone a night to just taking one 7.5 mg pill. I have done this for about 3 weeks l. For the past couple of nights, I tried cutting back to just a half a Zopiclone and it has not gone well. Last night, I woke up at 2:30 after falling asleep at 11, and took the other half of Zopiclone because I just could face the day on so little sleep. I know it will not be easy to quit entirely.

TLDR: What has been your experience taking Valdoxan to try and quit Zopiclone?
