Ult cancel vs no cancel

Sorry if this is a repost I am new to this sub. I have been playing wukong for some time, and I've always thought using the ult for knockup then cancelling it early to use q and e before pressing w for the double ult is the most optimal damage but I've watched a few high elo wukongs use ult for the whole duration every time. Is there a reason for this? It always feels like the whole duration does less damage than your normal abilities.

I just don't really enjoy invading

I'm a hard stuck plat jungler that is really looking to improve, and I think my play style is dependent apon full clearing on repeat into ganking when a lane op doesn't have any dashes and pushes up. I usually don't really go into enemy jungle unless I'm taking a sneak raptor camp or if they're in my bot side I go to their top side etc but I don't really enjoy playing the game of "run into their jungle and kill them on their camps". It's just not fun for me and some of the time I have to depend on my laners to be willing to help and they usually don't want to, but coach Kirei usually recommends you basically should be living in enemy jg if you want to climb. So I guess my question is; is that really a necessity if you want to climb? Is it possible to climb just from farming and ganking or is the genuine optimal strategy to play graves and shaco and just run down their jungle most games?
