Mitochondria and healthy aging

What if changes in our mitochondria are one of the reasons we age?

Every cell in your body runs on mitochondria. And as you age, those mitochondria progressively break down, losing their structure, their flexibility, and their ability to produce energy efficiently.

Researchers at Germany's Leibniz Institute on Aging just identified a key mechanism behind that decline.

The culprit is the gradual loss of a membrane lipid called phosphatidylcholine. Without sufficient levels of this lipid, mitochondria lose the ability to fuse and adapt, a critical process that allows them to maintain healthy function. Cells starve of energy. Physical decline accelerates.

The discovery that followed is what makes this significant.

When researchers supplemented aging worms and stressed human cell cultures with phosphatidylcholine or its precursor, choline mitochondrial structure and function were restored toward a more youthful state. The mechanism is malleable. It can be intervened upon.

To be clear about what this is and isn't: a daily choline supplement will not make you biologically younger. The researchers are explicit about that. What this study provides is something more foundational, a concrete, identified target for future therapies designed to slow or delay the mitochondrial decay that underlies much of what we experience as aging.

For decades, longevity research has been searching for specific, actionable mechanisms rather than vague associations. This is one. A lipid. A known decline pathway. A demonstrated reversal in living organisms.

The powerhouses of the cell have an off switch. Researchers just found it has a reset button

Can deuterium-depleted water replace probiotics for gut health?

We usually think of probiotics when we talk about gut health, but what about the water we drink?

Probiotics and deuterium-depleted water (DDW) are very different. Probiotics add live bacteria to the gut, while DDW is water with less deuterium.

Some research is looking at how deuterium affects cells and energy production. Since the gut is made up of cells that need energy to function, this has raised questions about whether DDW could have a role in gut health too.

But that doesn’t mean DDW works like a probiotic. It doesn’t add bacteria to the gut or directly replace them. Any possible effect would likely be through the body’s cells and the gut environment.

There’s still a lot to learn about this. Research on DDW and the gut microbiome is limited, so it’s too early to say that DDW can replace probiotics.

Do you think DDW could have its own role in gut health, or should probiotics and DDW be looked at as two completely different things?

How much water should you drink daily based on your weight?

Most people guess how much water they should drink, and many get it wrong.

The amount of water you need can be linked to your body weight. There is a formula you can use as a guide.

Your body is about 60% water, and every organ, cell, and body process needs enough water to work properly.

Here’s a simple daily water guide:

The formula:

Weight in kg × 35 ÷ 250 = daily glasses

50 kg → 7 glasses

70 kg → 10 glasses

80 kg → 11 glasses

90 kg → 13 glasses

100 kg → 14 glasses

Why do bigger bodies often need more water?

A larger body has more tissue and may lose more water through breathing, sweating, and urination.

Getting enough water can support normal kidney function, digestion, joints, skin, and focus.

Find your weight, use the formula as a starting point, and stay hydrated. How many glasses of water do you usually drink each day? 💧

Inviting of members

Hi all! I’m one of the mods of r/Litewater. We’re trying to get more people to join and have more talks about water and DDW.

I read that there’s a limit of about 5 invites a day. Since we have 4 mods, can each mod send 5 invites a day, or is the limit for all the mods together?

Also, how do you usually invite people? I’m still new to being a mod and trying to learn what works best to grow a community without making it look like spam. Thankyou in advance!

How do I verify the quality of deuterium depleted water online?

Buying DDW online can be a little confusing because you can't exactly test the water yourself before ordering it. There are a lot of products out there, so it helps to know what to look for.

Start with the deuterium level. A product saying “deuterium depleted” isn't enough. Look for an actual ppm number so you know how low the level is.

Also check whether the company shows lab results or a certificate of analysis. The report should show the deuterium level and have enough information to tell you when and how it was tested.

The way the water is made is worth looking at too. DDW needs a special process to remove some of the deuterium, so a company that explains its process clearly is easier to evaluate than one that gives you very little information.

Then there's the basic water quality. Look at where the water comes from, how it's purified, and whether the company provides any other testing.

Price is another thing to compare. DDW will usually cost more than regular bottled water because the production process takes more equipment, energy, and testing. So instead of just looking at the bottle price, compare the ppm and price per liter.

Don't just take the label at face value. Check the ppm, look for actual testing, and see how much information the company is willing to share. That alone can help down the options quite a bit..

What’s your sign that you need more water?

One easy thing to keep an eye on is urine color. It can give you an idea if you're drinking enough water.

  • Pale yellow - usually means you’re getting enough fluids.
  • Darker yellow - might be a sign to drink a bit more.

It’s not a perfect way to check but it’s an easy thing to notice during the day.

Do you check your urine color to see if you're drinking enough water?

Is DDW suitable for everyone?

Deuterium depleted water sounds simple since it’s still water, but daily use may not be the same for everyone. Some groups have simply not been studied enough to know what regular use means for them.

For children, there isn't much research on drinking DDW every day. Kids also have different fluid needs, so it’s better not to assume that adult routines apply to them.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are another area where information is limited. These groups are often not included in DDW studies, so there isn't enough evidence to make strong claims about daily use.

People with kidney conditions or other ongoing health issues may also need to be more careful. Their water intake can be part of their overall treatment, so changing it is something worth discussing with a healthcare professional first.

For healthy adults, the main thing is to look at the available information and avoid assuming that DDW has the same effect on everyone.

If there’s a specific health condition, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or a child involved, getting professional advice before making DDW part of a daily routine is the safer option.

Context:

Kakahiwalay lang namin ng ex ko. Around 5 months lang naging kami. Nasa Canada siya, nasa Pilipinas naman ako. During our relationship, magbigay sya ng watch, airpods, food deliveries ganyan. Hindi naman ako nanghingi ng kahit ano. Lahat yun kusa niyang binigay.
