Is it normal for companies to expect social media managers/content strategists to also know paid marketing in detail?

I’ve been giving interviews lately for social media/content roles, and I noticed many companies combine multiple jobs into one role content creation, strategy, editing, organic growth, analytics, and even performance marketing.

I’m more experienced in content strategy, editing, reels, audience engagement, and organic content, but interviewers keep asking me deep paid ads questions even after I clearly mention that I’m still learning that side.

I understand knowing the basics is important, but isn’t paid marketing usually a separate specialization?

Also, how do you answer “what strategy would you apply?” questions when you haven’t actually worked with the brand yet or analyzed their audience/data deeply?

Would genuinely love advice from people already working in marketing/social media.
