I'm currently trying out Emby
Because of the current heat wave, I had to shut down my massive media server (Plex). My hard drives aren’t getting cooled properly anymore, and given current market prices, I’d rather give the server a break. I don’t want to give up my Plex server entirely or move it right now, so I installed Emby on my small, old Synology, which uses only a few watts and handles the heat better.
I’m totally surprised at how well and easily Emby works. The content recognition is on par with Plex—at least in my experience—though I’ve only copied a few gigabytes of movies and TV shows for the summer. Plex looks nicer, but functionally I think Emby is better: no extra junk I don’t want, no spyware trying to spy on me. Above all, the players for iOS and Android are wonderfully simple and functional. No junk they’re trying to foist on me that nobody wants or needs—just my media libraries. That’s how Plex should be again. Sure, Emby is a different use case, but I’m seriously wondering how Plex plans to survive. Why would anyone pay so much money for a bad experience like the one with this unacceptable Plex app?
