Engraving a ball for my son.
My son bowls in a Special Olympics group. My mother bought him a really cool ball for his birthday this year and asked me if I would engrave a stylized initial on it for him.
I am proficient with a rotary tool and have steady hands.
How deep and how wide should the lines be? It seems like I have seen some engraved balls with 1/16" or 3/64" line weight. They're painted or filled somehow.
Can anyone cue me in on what would be appropriate for this, any tips/tricks, or warnings about this?

Has anyone ever made a metal plate that could be used with metal blocks to stop the piece from melting out of bounds? It could even be heated uniformly in an oven or something. It could be made from aluminum on a CNC mill or something.
