I got tired of walking a USB stick to my embroidery machine, so I built one that takes designs over WiFi

I got tired of walking a USB stick to my embroidery machine, so I built one that takes designs over WiFi

Short version: a little WiFi gadget that looks like a normal USB stick to the machine.

Two modes:

  • USB mode: it's a stick, nothing on the WiFi side can touch it, and that's how it sits while the machine stitches.
  • WiFi mode: it drops off the USB port, you drag designs in from any browser on your home network (Mac, Windows, phone, doesn't matter), switch back, and the machine sees a freshly plugged stick.

It's formatted the way these machines want (FAT16 or FAT32 behind an MBR, small), because that's the part that drives everyone crazy. No app, no account, no cloud.

I built it for my Janome MC500e: it lists the designs and writes its own EMB folder like on any stick. Also tested on a Brother PE800, a few Chinese embroidery machines, and on a few CNC machines after a friend tried it on his Haas and never gave it back 🙃

Happy to answer anything about how it behaves on a given machine.

Can’t find Ultra 400X. Ok with regular Ultra 400 ?

Looking to buy Ultra 400X to build my Prickly Gorse 50L project, but can’t find it in the US.

Rockywoods has the regular 400 on stock, and knowing it has some delamination issues… would you still consider it?

Main goal is abrasion resistance while still being light… any other recommendations?

Looking for feedback on a 50L pack with panel-access zippers idea

I’m planning a 50L backpack build for roughly 50% travel and 50% backpacking.

I’ll be starting from the Prickly Gorse 50L framed pack pattern

Planned changes:

  • Ultra 400X main body. and Venom o Utrastretch mesh for pockets
  • Two vertical waterproof zippers on the front panel (see image), creating panel-like access to the main compartment.
  • Roll-top closure retained.

The goal is to keep the simplicity of a UL pack while making it much easier to access gear during travel.

My questions:

  • Any obvious issues with adding these two long waterproof zippers?
  • How would you reinforce the zipper areas in Ultra 400X?
  • Recommended zipper size (#5 vs #8 Aquaguard)?
  • Best US sources for Ultra 400X, frame stays, foam, spacer mesh, and hardware?
  • How much could all materials cost in the end?

Has anyone built something similar?

Thanks!
