Beginner HG Advice - American in Scotland

Hello! I’m in the process of signing up for the Heavy Highland Games in Pitlochry this September. I’m based in America and wanted to participate in the games during my upcoming visit to Scotland. I had a few questions which I would appreciate some advice on!

  1. Gear, I was looking into purchasing some gear from HGWarehouse which is based in Scotland but the shipping just wouldn’t make sense to do so. Any advice on making my own practice gear? Also, for similar reason, is it possible to get loaner gear while at the games?

  2. The event says I have to sign up with the RSHGA but when trying to do so on it’s website (Which reroutes to JustGo) but my debit card company reported it as suspicious and won’t let me do so until I call the card company tomorrow. Can anyone confirm if that is the proper route to pay?

  3. Beginner events, having not yet signed up (having to get RSHGA membership) it just lists the sign up as Heavies. I’m familiar with the events associated with heavies but does it just sign me up for all of them or do I get the choice? Also, are there any beginner friendly events or “weight classes” (for lack of a better term) or does everyone just compete against everyone?

Best Kilt Options for Highland Games?

Hello, American looking to start participating in the heavy Highland Games and looking to get my first kilt. A few questions come to mind and I’d like to hear your all’s opinions on suitable kilts. I’d also like the kilt to be something I wouldn’t mind wearing in other situations (though honestly not sure what that would be).

// Size Info — 6’8” 280lbs

  1. What material would work best for the games? P/V, light, or heavy wool? Personally, based on my limited research I’m thinking a lighter weight wool to be more versatile than a P/V kilt (but let me know if I’m wrong).

  2. As far as sizing goes, I’m quite a bit larger than the average person, how does the length sizing work? I understand it’s supposed to fall above the knee, but am unfamiliar with how to determine if a kilt is long enough based on online measurements.

  3. Type of kilt, I personally like the look and style of the great kilts but don’t want to look like a fool, are great kilts acceptable to wear at the games? Both from a perspective of mechanics (participating in athletic events) and of norm/fashion… I know kilts aren’t everyday wear, even for Scots, and are mainly for special occasions (games, weddings, funerals, etc.) and while as a American I wouldn’t have much reason to wear the kilt other than the games I’d like something that theoretically could do both. And the great kilts speak to me for the more formal events, yet like previously mentioned I don’t want to look stupid.

Thanks for your responses in advance!!
