Any recommendations for good places to get a nice quality sgian dubh in the UK?
Many years ago, while living in Canada, I was attending a function that required I wear a kilt. I did not own one, but we had neighbors who were an older couple from East Lothian.
The ol' dear marched over one morning with a bottle of whiskey in one hand and a suit bag in the other. We ended up making haggis, drinking whiskey, and learning about kilts.
Long story short, she loaned me her husband's "proper" kilt (which weighed about a ton) and all the accessories. The first thing I noticed was the soft piece of linen attached to the front on the inside ... this clootie was soft and detachable, and placed in just the right place to protect a man'spride. When I asked, she replied: for wearing it regimental, ye Ken?
According to her, it was the only True way of telling a men's kilt. Wash the linen and not the kilt.
That day began my love of highland whiskey and the appreciation of the kilt!
BTW: I married a lass from Scotland almost 40 years ago.
Trying on my kilt outfit for the first time prior to attending a wedding (in Scotland) as a guest, any advice for a newbie or anything I’ve done catastrophically wrong?
I’m wanting to get yardage of DunBroch (from Pixar’s Brave) tartan.
I’m in the US so I’m assuming I will have to order it from somewhere which doesn’t bother me, but none of the websites I’ve checked out have it listed. So I figured maybe Disney would sell it cause they’re crazy about copyright but they do not.
Advice on where I could get it?
Also how much do I get for a great kilt? I’ve seen anywhere between 5 and 13 yards which seems like a huge range.
Okay, maybe the title's a bit weird, hahaha, but my point is this: I wear my kilt regimental (without underwear) and I know how to sit without exposing myself, especially when I'm around women, but when it's just men, is it necessary to be careful? I don't think so, but what do you guys think?
Hey, as a groom I am wearing a kilt for the first time. I need some help although it may be a silly question. Just wanted to ask if the set up makes sense:
- Modern Douglas kilt, flashes, tie, and plaid
- brown jacket and waistcoat
- black shoes and white socks
- black sporran with silver cantle
Does it make sense? Does it break a convention?
(sorry for the AI slop, and no that's not me 😂)

Any advice on the kilt? I still have time to get a tailor to alter things!
Two points:
1 - I forgot to put on the kilt pin (that's my bad)
2 - As I understand, the shirt's cufflinks should show beyond the Prince Charlie sleeve? But the shirt sleeves keep slipping down a bit too far - any advice on that?
Thank you in advance to everyone! I've never worn one before, and unfortunately my Dad isn't around anymore to give me his advice!
UPDATES:
Thank you to you all who took the time to offer your advice and feedback to a completely clueless novice!

Still young in my mind but body starting to periodically remind me I'm not so youbg any more 😅
I need to order a matching kilt.
Showing Clydesdales at the Scottish Fest in Co;umbus IN in September and need to at least match.
Nearest I can come is 74th Regiment of Foot, but it's not an exact match.
I looked on the Tartan Registry but A. My eyesight is shit and B. I got bewildered.
Hi, I am in the market for kilt socks for my wedding. I have purchased a pair of Harris socks from House of Cheviot which fit round my calf but the length isn’t right.
For reference I am 201cm, 50cm calf circumference and from the floor to the middle of my knee cap is around 57cm.
I am wondering if there are any tall, large calved individuals who might be able to recommend either, I) a way to make my current socks work as they don’t come up far enough, or II) somewhere I can purchase some socks which would fit my leg dimensions?
Thanks in advance!
Recently started Historical European Martial Arts fencing and needless to say the group is filled with the wild and wacky. I used to be a daily kilter and am considering bringing it back (with proper groin/thigh protection) to fence in. Has anyone got any experience with this kind of thing?
Edit: maybe I'm just justifying my purchase 🤔
UPDATE: Burn test results
I did a burn test on some loose fibers after posting this. The fabric melted, smelled strongly like plastic, and left behind a hard plastic bead/lump rather than soft ash. Based on that, I’m skeptical of the claimed 75% wool blend. This is a case of you get what you pay for!
Long read here gents, but I'd love your thoughts!
I recently picked up one of the “75% wool blend” kilts from Affordable Kilts for about $135 (delivered today), and I wanted to compare it against a bolt of genuine Strathmore 13oz wool cloth. For context, the Strathmore cloth alone was around ~$275 for a 5-yard bolt, so this isn’t exactly an apples-to-apples comparison. Still, I figured people here might appreciate some direct observations.
First impressions:
The AffordableKilts kilt honestly surprised me in a good way. The fabric is definitely heavier and stiffer than the Strathmore. The threads are visibly larger, the weave is coarser, and it doesn’t drape nearly as naturally. The Strathmore lays flatter, folds cleaner, bunches more naturally, and just has that smooth “high quality wool” feel you notice immediately. Maybe a little of 16 vs 13oz difference, but that only accounts for a small difference that I notice.
That said, the AffordableKilts fabric doesn’t feel bad at all. It’s actually softer and less itchy than I expected.
Edit* after burn test, I can't comment on if it's worth it compared to wool, still doesn't feel bad, but we will need to see over a few wears how it handles it.
About the “wool” question...This is where I’m skeptical. The website says 75% wool blend, while the sewn-in tag says 100% wool. I honestly don’t know what to believe. The kilt was made in Pakistan, and the fabric doesn’t behave like the higher-end wool cloth I’m used to.
Edit* burn test makes this moot.
Construction quality:
Overall construction is actually decent for the money.
The pleating is respectable (not amazing), stitching seems fine, and the kilt is absolutely wearable. My biggest complaint is the leather hardware:
Belt straps feel cheap
Leather loops are pretty flimsy
Hardware is functional but basic
Honestly though, replacing the straps and loops is pretty easy and inexpensive, so it’s not a dealbreaker for me.
Final thoughts:
Does not campare to premium Scottish wool... But for ~$135, I actually think it’s a solid value: Edit* failed burn test, but still not bad for the price...
Compared to genuine Strathmore cloth, the difference in fabric quality is obvious. But compared to most budget options? I think this lands in a pretty good middle ground.
Curious if anyone else here has experience with AffordableKilts wool blends long-term, especially regarding durability and whether the fabric actually contains the wool percentage claimed.
Fellow kilt wearers,
After corticosteroids caused me to pile on pounds, I was chuffed to lose 25kg when I weaned off them – and now that my jacket fits, again, I find that it has been attacked by moths, during the intervening years of non wear!🤦🏻♂️ I need a replacement, therefore – but I’m loathe to buy a new one, until my weight has stabilised. For this reason, I’m thinking of going down the ex-hire, or pre-owned, route…
I happen to be flying up to Edinburgh, tomorrow, for 48hrs, and am looking for recommendations – please – for where I might find either a Prince Charlie Coatee, or a Montrose Doublet, which may be worn with kilt or trews. I have an important Bomb Alley Survivors Club (the Officers of HMS BROADSWORD, Falkland Islands, 1982) reunion dinner, next month, so would really like to square this away before then!
Many thanks, folks!🙏🏼
