How to get more out of limited therapy sessions
Hi! I live in Sydney Australia with my girlfriend. She has just gone to her first therapy appointment which is something we discussed for a while and deemed necessary not only for our relationship, but mainly for her own wellbeing as well. The issue is: Medicate here only does rebates for 10 sessions per year.
Personally I could go on a LONG ramble about how damn ridiculous that is because who the hell is benefiting from only going to therapy less than once a month? But whatever… During her first session, the therapist recommended that she come in for weekly sessions… That’s great and all except for the fact that after those 10 medicare covered sessions, every single week we’d be paying around $300 PER SESSION. EVERY. SINGLE. WEEK.
So here’s my question: do you guys think it would be more effective to do:
A) 10 weeks of weekly therapy appointments and be explicit with her therapist that she’s ready to put in the WORK and get a lot done in these 10 sessions
OR
B) split them up and do 1 session per month (and then just pay for the remaining 2 monthly sessions of the year)
If she were to do option A, what are some books or journals to look into so that she can do the foundational work at home in between sessions, and then really get the most out of the actual hour long sessions themselves? She’s new to the therapy stuff, and I don’t think she finds it ideal to have to spend the first few sessions starting right from the therapy foundations and almost “wasting” the medicare rebates. So is there a way for her to start the individual work thru guided journaling so that the sessions themselves can be more focused on applying these newfound skills/coping mechanisms to her life situation specifically?
