First Bluey Vuitton grow - Leaving for 2 days. Harvest now or wait? Some fruits look stalled and heavily bruised. [actives]

Hi everyone,

This is my first grow, and I’m looking for some advice from people who have experience with Bluey Vuitton.
I started with a Magic Bag, but the bag was accidentally damaged during fruiting, so with Magic Bag’s guidance I moved the colonized block into a shotgun fruiting chamber with damp perlite. Humidity has generally been around 90 to 95%, and I’ve been misting and providing fresh air exchange as recommended.

The cake has produced a huge number of fruits, but they’re all at different stages. Some have gotten quite large, while many smaller ones seem like they may have slowed or stopped growing. A lot of them have bruised blue very heavily, which I understand is common for this variety, but a few are darker and look a little rough.
The problem is that I’m leaving tomorrow morning (Friday) and won’t be back until Sunday.

I’m trying to decide between:
- Harvesting everything before I leave.
- Harvesting only the mature fruits and leaving the rest.
- Bringing the entire fruiting chamber with me (which I’d really rather not do).

A few questions:

Do you think some of these smaller, darker fruits have aborted, or do they still look like they have potential?

If you were leaving for about two days, what would you do?

Should I harvest the larger mushrooms now and leave the rest, or would that negatively affect the remaining fruits?

For Bluey Vuitton specifically, do these look like they’re developing normally?

I’ve included photos from last week and today for comparison in case it’s helpful to see which ones appear to have grown and which may have stalled. I'm starting to realize I should've harvested some of these awhile ago...

Thanks in advance. I’ve learned a ton from this community, and I’d really appreciate any advice before I make the wrong decision.

[Technique] Older LC Syringe, Rye Berries & First Spawn Jar Questions

Hello again, friends!

I truly appreciate all the help this community has given me with my first grow, so I figured I’d ask for some advice on my next project.

While cleaning up, I found an extra 10 mL liquid culture syringe of Jedi Mind F*ck (pictured) that I purchased back in March and completely forgot about. I do not have a Magic Bag for this one, as I did for my other two syringes of LC.

This syringe was unfortunately never refrigerated, but it has been stored in a cool, dark location. I realize the viability is questionable at this point, but I’d still like to give it a chance before writing it off.

I recently picked up some organic rye berries and would like to experiment with a small test batch or two rather than let the syringe go to waste.

My goal is simply to determine whether the culture is still viable before investing a lot of time and materials.

Up until now I’ve only used pre-made all-in-one grow bags. I already have several bricks of coco coir and a bag of perlite in my shed for later stages, but I’ve never made my own grain spawn, spawn jar, or spawn bag, so I’m hoping to learn and avoid some obvious beginner mistakes.

A few questions:

  1. If you found an older liquid culture syringe, would you still test it, or assume it’s no longer viable? Is there any way to visually tell?

  2. For small test batches, what containers do you prefer?

  3. If a pressure cooker doesn’t have a rack or trivet, what do people typically use to keep jars off the bottom?

  4. What are the most common mistakes people make when working with rye berries for the first time?

I’d appreciate any advice on equipment, containers, techniques, or things you wish you had known when you started.

Thanks in advance!

Day 94 Update (June 22) [actives]

Hello! This is my first grow, and looking for some more advice. Thank you to the peeps who helped answer my initial questions a couple weeks ago when I was fighting contam in my other grow bag.

Anyways, I inoculated this all-in-one bag on March 20 and it started pinning around June 12-13. This is where it is today.

A few questions:

  1. Why is most of the growth happening around the edges and sides while the center remains mostly bare? Is there a way to encourage growth in the bare areas?

  2. Even with a rubber band around the bag, I’m still getting quite a few side pins. Should I leave everything in the bag for the entire flush, or is there any benefit to removing the cake at this point?

  3. Some of the fruits have cracked caps and some have bluish coloring. Does that look more like bruising, genetics, low humidity, or something else?

  4. Based on the photos, do these look more like Golden Teacher or Bluey Vuitton, or is it impossible to tell at this stage? I inoculated two bags with different cultures, but one contaminated and was discarded, so I’m no longer sure which culture this surviving one is.

Environment:
Southern California
Indoor temps generally 75-80°F
Exposed to indirect sunlight for most of the day
Cake is still in the original grow bag inside a clear plastic tote
I mist the walls of the bag/tote, not the cake directly
Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Update (June 19) - Day 91 from inoculation [technique]

I wanted to post a follow-up because things have changed quite a bit over the last week.
Background:
Magic Bag inoculated March 20 with liquid culture.
One bag developed contamination and was discarded.
This remaining bag started pinning around June 12-13.
Today is June 19 (Day 91 from inoculation).
The good news is that I’m finally getting mushrooms after what felt like forever.
The questions I have now are mostly about fruiting conditions and maximizing this flush.
Current setup:
Still fruiting in the original bag.
Rubber band around the cake.
Bag sits inside a clear plastic tote with a lid.
Southern California climate.
Indoor temps generally mid-70s to low-80s.
I mist the walls of the tote/bag area but not the cake directly.
Condensation forms, but often dries up by the next time I check it.
Questions:
Why is most of the fruiting happening around the edges and sides while the center of the cake is relatively sparse?
Even with the rubber band, I’m getting side pins. Is that normal?
At this stage would you:

Leave it alone in the bag?
Cut the bag down lower?
Remove the cake completely?
Move it into a monotub / shotgun fruiting chamber?
Does the fuzzy white growth around some of the bases look normal or does it suggest I need more fresh air exchange?
Would an atomizer or humidifier help in a setup this small, or is that overkill?
Looking at the photos, does the surface look adequately hydrated or does it appear too dry?
If you were in my shoes, what would you do from this point forward to maximize the first flush and hopefully get a healthy second flush?
Also, based on appearance, does anyone have a guess whether this is more likely Golden Teacher or Bluey Vuitton? Unfortunately I mixed up my labels early on and no longer know which bag was which.
Thanks again to everyone who helped me get this far. After 91 days of staring at a bag of dirt and wondering what I did wrong, it finally decided to grow. 🍄

Magic Bag LC grow - 78 days from inoculation and still no pins. Looking for advice [contamination]

Hello! I inoculated two Magic Bags on March 20 using Myyco liquid culture syringes. One bag received Golden Teacher and the other received Bluey Vuitton. I unfortunately failed to label them, so I no longer know which is which. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Both bags colonized well and I did a break-and-shake once they were heavily colonized. I later opened them according to Magic Bag fruiting instructions and have been providing fresh air exchange.

It’s now June 6, almost 11 weeks after inoculation, and I still have zero pins in either bag.

Bag #1: (images 3-6)
Mostly white mycelium
No bad smell
Surface covered with tiny moisture beads
No obvious green contamination
No pins, primordia, or fruits that I can identify

Bag #2: (images 1 & 2)
Developed several small green patches
Q-tip test transferred green onto the swab, so I suspect trichoderma
Green areas have not exploded or taken over the entire bag
No bad smell
Still no pins

Questions:
Do the bags look stalled, overlayed, too wet, too dry, or otherwise abnormal?
Would you continue fruiting conditions or make changes?
Is there any realistic chance the contaminated bag could still produce?
Would you leave the contaminated bag alone or discard it?
For anyone with experience growing Bluey Vuitton, how long did it take before you saw pins?

Photos attached.

Any feedback is appreciated. This is my first attempt and I know next time I’ll be labeling everything and paying closer attention to my setup.
