How many people would go to hell according to early Christians?

Did they believe that without knowledge of Jesus people would go automatically to hell? Did they think that only themselves are going to be saved? Considering there were so little of them, did they think how 99% of people would end up not being saved ?

How did this change with an evolving image of hell and many new people accepting Christianity over time?
