Dorm kitchen/meal plan question
Hello!
I’m a transfer student coming to NC State this fall, and I’m trying to figure out how realistic it is to cook my own meals and save money while living in a dorm.
I actually really enjoy cooking, and I’m pretty good at it, but every dorm kitchen I’ve seen at colleges looks tiny, crowded, or badly maintained. Meal prepping in those setups seems like it could become a nightmare pretty quickly.
I’m also an athlete who absolutely inhales food, think 220g protein and around 5000 calories a day. Unfortunately I wasn’t recruited, so I can’t use the athlete meal plan setup.
Has anyone here managed to mostly cook for themselves while dorming at NC State? How did you make it work?
Things I’m wondering about:
- Are the communal kitchens actually usable?
- Is fridge/freezer space a huge problem?
- Did you still end up needing a meal plan anyway?
- Any dorms that are better or worse for cooking?
- What meals/foods worked realistically?
I’m trying to figure out whether:
- Cooking most of my meals is actually possible, or
- I should just accept that dining halls + simple dorm food is the more realistic option for my first year.
Would really appreciate any honest experiences or advice.
