My country residence setup

It's important for me that I have a functional workstation with good sound at our country residence. Laptop into the dock and that's it.

For sound I have:

  • Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Go! Pro USB DAC
  • Muse Audio M21 EX2 Amp (Tripath TA2021b)
  • Amphion Ion speakers (Yes, those are bricks under the stands to get them to the correct height! And that piece of foam from an old mattress functions as a diffuser.)

So Long and Thanks for All the Fish

Today's the day that my 3rd Gen Kindle Keyboard will stop syncing with Amazon. It's jailbroken and all my purchased books have been... made compatible with KOReader. I will keep the device a a backup since its worth like that is much higher than what I could get by selling it.

I made the switch to a Kobo Libra Colour a few weeks back and, honestly, I don't see myself coming back to the Amazon ecosystem for a long time, if ever.

It's been a fun 13 years, but like the title already says... so long, and thanks for all the fish.

Made the switch from Kindle to Kobo yesterday

This Kindle 3rd Gen Keyboard has been my first and only eReader until now. I got it 2nd hand in 2013 and replaced the battery in 2024. With the May 20th deadline approaching, I've been actively looking for suitable alternatives for a few weeks now.

Yesterday I hit the jackpot and found a little-used KLC with a sleep cover at a local auction site for €100. Naturally, I didn't hesitate a second to purchase it.

Using USB and Calibre (and a plugin that shall remain anonymous) I imported all my AZW3 books from Kindle to my PC and uploaded them as ePubs to Kobo. While at it, I also installed KOReader as the default reader software with Zen UI and a few additional fonts (Atkinson Hyperlegible, Fanwood).

The new device works flawlessly and is so much snappier and lighter to handle than the old Kindle. I think I'll leave it as a backup device, though, as it's been jailbroken and is also running KOReader.

While using KOReader on a non-touchscreen device is / has been... manageable, with Kobo I can finally appreciate what a fantastic piece of software it is.

Glad to be part of the Kobo userbase now!
